You must do as much as you...

by freya_heaven

You must do as much as you can & there is a lot here to see. It would be a great shame not to leave the beach or hotel complex. I have so many I cant pin to down to one. The elephant orphanages are a must, they are so majestic. Dambulla to see the cave temple, they were building a 'Vegas style' enterance to it when we were there. we made friends with our Tuk Tuk driver & went to his house for tea & met his family a few times which was nice.I loved the Kandy Dancers in Kandy. Actually I think my most special memory was our driver had taken us to his buddist temple for the evening we were made so welcome by the monks, it was very warm & balmy, The candles & chanting made it very atmospheric. That was very special.Photo is of our tuk tuk driver & his lovely family, outside their home

Individual or package tour?

by Sunchild

The best time to visit Sri Lanka (western side): Middle of November till beginning of March. Well, I always spend a lot of time b e f o r e we actually book any holiday (from Germany). Nearly at each trip we meet people in hotels, who book their round-trips at the beach as this seems to be cheaper! Most of the time this means though, they pay their hotel at the same time and the trip on top! Well - I think, this can be arranged better. A specialist for trips to Sri Lanka is Kumara-Reisen, specialising on Sri Lanka and Maldives,(obviously only appropriate for those travelling from Germany) and is one I can HONESTLY advise. Just ask them for an offer and they will work out one individually for you and your "desires" at all nearly all hotel standards and at reasonable(!) prices (and you can trust me for that - I always compare prices very "up to the point"! We were really more than...

Kingdoms

by nepalgoods

Portugal and The Netherlandds left their marks on Sri Lanka, but the Sri Lankan Kingdoms stayed more or less independant. There were several kingsoms on Sri Lanka. There had been a Tamil Kingdom in Jaffna, but that was ended by the Portuguese . Most important was the Kingdom of Kandy.

The Dutch

by nepalgoods

Around 1600 the Dutch started trading in Sri Lanka. Their contact and friendship with the King of Kandy grew very fast. And in the middle of the 17th century they had captured most of the Sri Lankan territory. Their main interest was the trade with spices. The influence of the Calvinist Dutch on the religions was not very big. Most Sri Lankan Christs are still Roman Catholic.

The Portuguese

by nepalgoods

In the beginning of the 16th century the Portuguese came. Their major interest were trading with the Sri Lankans. They controlled the southwest coastal regions. Around 1600 they converted the singhalese royal family to Catholicism. You can still find some Portuguese looking churches and many Portuguese names in the ssouthwest of Sri Lanka.

Buddhism - History III

This two relicts are the centers of worship. There have been other earlly highlights of Buddhism, which had more influence on Buddhism in Sri Lanka. About 2000 years ago the holy scriptures (Tripitaka) were first written on palm leaves. In the 5 th century the famous monk Buddhaghosa Thera came from India and compiled the voluminous Pali commentaries that firmly established Sri Lanka as the home of Theravada Buddhism.Theravada meaning "Teachings of the Old"

Buddhism - History II

The second event was about 500 years later in the 4th century A.D. another great treasure arrived in Sri Lanka. That was the buddha's left tooth. This tooth was very treasured and is now in the temple of Kandy. Every year the repolica of this tooth is paraded around the city for two weeks in August. That is called the Perahera Festival.

Buddhism - History

by nepalgoods

Two very important events in ancient Sri Lankan history had long-reaching effects on island Buddhism and worship patterns, persisting even today. The first occurred during the residence of Mahinda at Anuradhapura. The sage's father, Emperor Asoka of India, too a cutting of the sacred Bo Tree, under which the Buddha had attained enlightenment, and sent it to Sri Lanka. It was transportet to Sri Lanka in the care of his daughter , the nun Sanghamitta. The tree was planted in Anuradhapura, where it remains today - not the original one but a replanted cutting of it.
