Lal Lanka Tours (tuk tuk)
If you are planning to visit the cultural triangle why not save yourself time and get yourself a great tuk tuk driver. Lal has one of the most comfortable rides in Sri Lanka with car seats fitted into his piaggo. The extra boot space means your luggage can easily fit without you feeling uncomfortable. He is based in Sigiriya usually stationed outside the Sigiriya Rest House. His prices are reasonable and he is an honest guy with excellent time keeping. I met Lal first in Polonnaruwa and he negotiates a discount on a superb rice and curry buffet at Ariya Rest House lkr700 instead of lkr800.
Lal can pick you up at the airport or anywhere in the cultural triangle just drop him an email, phone or skype him. His English is great and he has a good sense of humour always smiling and doing his best for his customers. He can arrange car taxi service and jeep safaris in Kadulla or Mineria. In fact Lal’s tuk tuk has travelled the whole of Sri Lanka so its not exclusive to the cultural triangle

In our case we used a bus from Anuradhapura to reach Polonnaruwa. it was a slow trip in an old fashioned bus and as usual crowded. We even had a break down....!!!
Beware though to tell the driver to let you get off at Polonnaruwa "Old Town" close to Seylan Bank. The bus and train station are actually 3 kms away from there at the town of Kaduruwela. Neverthless the cost is very little!
Bus and train stations
Both the train and bus stations are in Kaduruwela, four kilometres east of town. Buses generally pass through town though so you should be able to hop off in the centre near the post office. You could hop on here as well when leaving, but if you want to make sure you have a seat you should go out to the bus station.

Best way to see Polonnaruwa
The best way to see the UNESCO site is by bike. Most people arrive and go through the site by car or large tourist bus. It's quite refreshing and cooling to ride through the gravel path by bike. You can rent the bikes at the rest house, by the Polonnaruwa museum. Also, you can pick up guides there -many have their own bikes.
