Kalmunai is well connected to rest of the country by the very frequent Intercity Bus although these are not suitable for long distance travel.
There are no luggage compartment, just small over head racks inside which is not big enough to keep larger size bags.
from Colombo (Bus stop near Old Moor Street) it takes around 10 hours to Ampara (Bus Stop near the clock tower) and the cost is SLR 320 for Non Air conditioned Bus. from Amapara you have to take another Bus to Kalmunai for SLR12
Peoples keep getting in during transit and night buses are often Jam Packed with peoples standing all the way.
The Bus do stops at least 5 to 7 times at Military/Police check post for Luggage Search and ID checks so keep your passport in your front pocket.
The Rest Area can be a very small and dirty restaurant which pays commission to Bus Staff for bringing in the customers and there are no facility of CLEAN Wash Rooms/Toilets.

There are Air conditioned Vans direct to Kalmunai and fare is double (650) then the Non A/C Bus and you will have to buy 1 extra seat for your luggage, The Van departs from Bus Terminal near Colombo High Courts at around 7 PM and the ride is more comfortable it stops in Kandy at around mid night for having quick meal and reach Kalmunai early morning around 5 to 6 am
There are quite a few Jewellet Shops in kalmaunai where you can sell or buy US Dollar or other Foreign Currencies.
