This is a muslim run clean cafe style restaurant opposit the bus stand very convenient if you want to grab a snack before catching the bus to an onward journey they do plenty of shorties such as meat or vegetable samoosas, egg rolls and roti as well as a few sweet treats.

Also they serve a range of eastern delights kotthu roti, hoppers and rice and curry to name a few. They seem to be open from early morning to night and the staff are very friendly with a reasonable uderstanding of english

Favorite Dish: My friend loves the freshly brewed ginger tea without sugar accompanied by a bran muffin. I am partial to a beef samoosa or beef roti.

Captains Deck - Chaaya Blu: Hotel bufet style

    by jo104 Written Jan 30, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Usually there is a buffet for breakfast as well as dinner and it is open to guests outside of the hotel. The dining area is outside under cover which allows for a lovely breeze. The buffet inside is comprised of salads, soup, breads, sri Lankan selection, for European tastes boiled vegetables, pie, stir fry station, chicken dishes and a variety of other dishes. Outside is 2 stations where they will be serving a hot speciality maybe a carvery.

The food is fairly tasty although I do know they bring their fish in from negombo although this may have changed now the cinnamon group have taken over. The dessert buffet is worth a second helping and they have cheese although sadly mostly processed. There is no smoking inside the restaurant the net that surround it is to keep the crows and squirrels out.

The buffet costs around LKR2,200 per person Net.

    The Crab: Beach hotel restaurant

    by jo104 Written Jan 30, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The food at the crab is quite good although depending on which chef is working it can be a little bit hit and miss. Out of their snack menu I have tried their normal burger as well as their chicken burger which are fairly tasty and good value. Their club sandwich definetly fills a hole in the stomach complete with chicken, ham, cheese and egg served with chips. Their pizzas were not bad although not thin and crispy more soggy but plenty of roasted vegetables and meat I usually asked for a vegetarian with meat topping. They serve little bread rolls complimentary its easy to stuff yourself on these as they are baked onsite and very yummy. I have also tried the chicken kebabs as well as the aubergine salad which I have to say was not my favourite.

For desserts they have a small selection that is nicely presented but not very big. Tea and cake can be served it works out a nice deal especially if you just want a snack inbetween breakfast and dinner.

Do be aware that service charge of 10% is added to the bill as well as 12.5% tax and 2.5% nbt so it adds a whopping 25% try to look for any deals were the cost is net.

    Zim Zam: Local cafes

    by jo104 Written Feb 13, 2012

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you feel like venturing into town for some local food this is a pretty clean cafe to eat in. They do kotthu which is a thick rice noodle with chopped chicken, egg & chilli's a real art to make you will know if they serve it just follow the chopping sounds. This place also does mixed meat in gravy (this includes offal), beef, chicken pieces, curry chicken as well as roti.

Eat with your hands like the locals, wash the plate first and there is usually a place to wash your hands.

By the way even though this place calls itself a hotel it is not a guest house this is something common in Sri Lanka as there is no law against it

Happy Cream House: Fresh Fruit Juice

A popular place to get delicious fresh fruit juice in town. Drop in here if you are feeling a bit hot and bothered whilst shopping in town. You can enjoy your fresh fruit juice even with a scoop of ice-cream. Do be sure to tell the staff you don't want added sugar as locals tend to have a much sweeter tooth.

I have tried woodapple & mixed fruit juice to date. They will also provide you with a plate of shorties these are deep fried bites like samoosa, chicken or egg rolls very nice indeed! You only pay for what you eat.

Favorite Dish: meat samoosa & mix fruit juice
