Ancient Hindu Temple of Mannar, Sri Lanka

by curtis-star

THIRUKETHEESWARAM temple is the most ancient temple in Sri Lanka. It can be found in the Mannar district (North-Western province). Scholar and Historian, Paul E. Peiris dates the temple back to ancient times well prior to the arrival of King Vijaya and the Singhalese invaders from Northern Bengal (6th century B.C). This temple was built by the original Tamil inhabitants from Southern India who would have come to Sri Lanka via the causeway connecting Southern India with Mannar, Sri Lanka. The temple is dedicated to the Supreme Lord Siva, creator and destructor. Many devotees to this temple have experienced miracles apparently.

If you get the chance - Visit Jaffna Northern Prov

by curtis-star

As Sri Lanka's popularity increases in 'Peace times,' the influx of tourists to the Island makes it increasingly difficult to escape the hoardes of European travellers. Jaffna however, remains a welcome oasis away the touristy areas as this part of the country still remains largely undiscovered. Take advantage of the many places to see in Jaffna such as Delft Island, Nagadipa Island (famous for it's ancient Buddhist temple), the many deserted beaches surrounded by coral reefs, the Nallur temple etc. Prices here in jaffna are even cheaper than the rest of the Island, although when I was there I made a point to tip heavily since these people live in such hardship and such a basic way.

Beautiful beaches

by suemac

The coast south of Galle has some lovely quiet beaches and coves between Unawatuna and Weligama. Swimming and snorkeling are good because of the reefs protecting the shore. This area has the famous stilt fishermen.

Negombo - Dry Fish

by musti72

As Negombo is a town of fishermen there are many sights linked to this activity. But beside the more famous fishmarket there are also some places where you can see how the process of drying the fish is made. Close to the resthouse on the beach you can see how it's done. Impressive quantities of fish covered with salt is laying under the burning sun.

by freya_heaven

This is one of the water features at the "Dream Park". I you have a spare hour or so & you are in the Aluthgama are (west coast), then go, it's somewhere else to visit. I would not make a special effort or travel to far to get here.Galle Road, Aluthgama

Dream Park

by freya_heaven

This was a strange little place. Our Tuk Tuk Driver took us here, with us not knowing much about it.It was full of birds of all shapes & sizes. They looked as if they were well relatively cared for. All the birds had their own area. Apparently this place used to be a mini Zoo, & all the way round the guide kept saying "it was only a small accident & they closed us down". I eventually got out of him what whis small accident was & a child had been killed by a drugged lion she was sitting on!. Crazy.................Very tragic & I am so glad they only have birds here now. But we did find it amusing he was perplexed his zoo was closed down by such a small accident!!

by freya_heaven

We went up the Beruwala River, Here was a lady soaking coconuts in this wooden cage, apparantly to waterproof them to use on top of her house. I would definately recommend a trip up the river, you see so much of life Inland of the coastal resorts of Beruwala & Bentota etc.
