Spotted Deer.

by Hmmmm

A rather nice thing, is the fact that deer, mainly spotted deer roam freely around the place.I photographed these deer hanging out deer Trincomalee Cricket Pitch. Eating the public grass.I love how well they camoflage against the grass. Also roaming freely are goats and cattle.

The Tea Peaking Girls

by inuit

On the way from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya you will drive along big tea plantations. Stop your car and go in between the tea plants lines to meet the women who are peaking the tea leaves. Many of them are Tamils. Notice the special nose earings they have.

RATNAPURA

by Umea6

You know what Malilyn Monroe sang ... Diamond are a girl's best friend. Ratnapura is a real gem city. Daimonds are not available here, but if you like sparkling precious and semi-precious stones such as sapphire, ruby, amethyst, cat's-eye and garnet this is the place to buy them. There are also some stores where you can see gems being mined and processed before they end up in shops.

A Bush School In Uppavelli (Trinco)

by Hmmmm

These children are waiting in their tropical style Classroom at the Uppevelli School waiting for their teacher. This School is a refugee School set up with the Help of The Australian Government. As you can see this part of Sri Lanka, is quite a special part. Its a good window in post civil war Sri Lanka, yet its not too scary since its not too far into Tamil country.

Trincomalee and North (Uppavelli), a must see.

by Hmmmm

This photo is taken a little north of the East Coat City of Trincomalee (Trinco). This area north of Trinco was quite hard hit during the civil war. with most of the surrounding buildings and farms destroyed. But its a special place, filled with friendly beautiful people and gorgeous scenery. These guys are waiting for the bus back into town as are we. Eventually the bus arrived and we all leaped aboard. The bus was full. We shared it with goats, men with grey gnarly beards, women wearing hindu Sari's and Bindhi, and women wearing the Muslim veil. Children with clip on faded striped school ties and polished black shoes and others without. We also shared the bus with four geared up soldiers, looking rather dapper in their DPMs, munty boots, loaded rifles and stealy piercing looks.I came to enjoy travelling by bus in Sri Lanka. Its marvellous. But don't eat Ice Creams aboard the bus. Its a...

Spice gardens

by Umea6

There are quite a few spice gardens around Sri Lanka. Most of them are guided and are free. You will see and hear of healing effect and ways of usage of many plants - vanilla, pepper, cocoa, sandalwood, nutmeg, ingwer, red pineapple,.... and many more. However, at the end of the tour you will be taken to their shop where they sell all sorts of medicines that can sure about anything and creams for all parts of your bodies. They expect you to buy some of them.

Hopper (Appa)

by Jarin

When visiting Sri Lanka you should try the (egg)hopper (English name for appa), kind of bowl-shaped pancake with an egg, served with sambol (hot and spicy mixture of peppers). Batter consists mainly from yeast, rice flour and coconut milk.At the picture you can see the cook making the hopper. In the low left corner self-made egghopper.

Flowers and Foliage

by supune

If you are into wierd/interesting flowers and plants, Sri Lanka has a great variety. Some of the flowers even have mythology behind them. There is a black flower called a Yaka mala (Devil flower); if you see it fall off a branch it means you will die soon--it's not pictured.I have no idea what the name ofthe flower pictured is, but it sure does look interesting.

Stilt fishermen

by yumiyun

This unique fishing practice can only be found along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Staring from Unawatuna, you can find group of fishermen perching on the pole staked in the water. The best place to see, as travel books and locals say, is Ahangama. However, you can find them in different spots between Ahangama and Unawatuna.
