If you are a couple, pack an umbrella

by call_me_rhia

Bring comfortable clothes and shoes for walking and visiting places. Try nto to wear too skimpy clothes Bring a swuimsuit even if you're not planning on going to the beach: some hotels have a swimsuit... and even without this: you are sometimes required to wear it for an ayurvedic massage you from the rain, it can protect you from the sun... and especially it can ürotect you from people's eyes. This is what I liked best in town - the sweetest sight of all... dozen and dozen of young couples at Galle Green, chilling out and kissing, hidden behind that useful umbrella.

Books to read

by mafi_moya

It's always good to read about a place before going and Sri Lanka has some good literature. Here are some of my personal opinions:Fiction:Anil's Ghost by Michael Ondaatje is an excellent chilling tale set against the war. Romesh Gunesekera's Monkfish Moon (a book of short stories) and Reef are other interesting reads on modern Sri Lanka. Carl Muller's books about the upper class Burger society are highly acclaimed and sexually explicit but personally I'm not a fan. Non-fiction:Only Man is Vile, by William McGowan is a fascinating account of the 'troubles' by a foreign journalist, as is Island of Blood by Anita Pratap. An Historical Relation of Ceylon, by Robert Knox, an Englishman held captive by the King of Kandy, is considered the best outside account of the Sinhalese people and culture, even though it was written several hundred years ago. Sri Lanka's most famous foreign resident is...

Mosquito Repellent is a must

by tommix

You don't need to bring a lot of clothes. It's better to buy them in Colombo. In the shoping malls like Odel you have a huge choice of branded clothes or shoes. And all is much cheaper then in Europe or States.Except for mountain areas the sensation of cold is something quite unknown in SL. You need a mosquito repellent. Even if there is no malaria threat on Sri Lanka you need to protect yourself from the mosquitos. There is a risk of dengue fever. You can read more about this disease in my "warning or danger tip".Most of the hotels and guesthouses provides the mosquito nets, so you don't have to bring your own one.On other hand, if you're not used to asian cuisine it's good to bring some stomach pills... Even in small villages you can find films or batteries for camera. But I'am not quite sure about the quality of those films. Because of the high temperatures...

Skeeters, mossies, whatever...

by llcole

Extra bags for your shopping, if you're of that inclination. Anything that dries quickly. Good walking sandals. Condoms, unless you want to ask for them at the pharmacy (they're not right out on the shelves). Some sort of mini-tripod. Mosquito "mat"?

Ear Plugs

by ogb4619

You should take a short (your heart may not stand a long one) taxi ride in the 3 wheeled scooter taxis.Because there are no windows to wind up, you'd best take a set of ear plugs each.Oh, and ensure your life and accident insurance is up to date

Camera Batteries are very hard to find

by 1Tony

Don't take to much clothing, get it made to measure by one of the local taylors whilst your there. TIP take a photograph with you of a design you like and have it made for you! Long lens for wildlife, wide angle for tourism. Batteries for SLR's

what to do before you leave + info Sri Lanka

by Martino100

ClimateThe best period to go to Sri Lanka is from December until march for the west and the south coast and the mountains. The best period to go to the east coast is from may until September.MoneyIn Sri Lanka you pay with a roepee. One roepee is 1,2 eurocent. In some shops and restaurants you can also pay with dollars. You can change your dollars without problems in any hotel or bank.VisaTravellers who live in West Europe, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zeeland, Hong Kong, Japan and China don’t need a special visa to get in to Sri Lanka. You get your visa automaticly when they arrive at the airport of Sri Lanka.HealthWhen you go to Sri Lanka it is best to get some shots against malaria, cholera, hepatitis and tyfus. You can also better take a first aid kid with you because a hospital can be far away when you get injured. Also boil first the water before you drink it.

Don't bring many clothes

by John1954

Take one change of clothes plus underwear and buy the rest in Sri Lanka. It's so cheap. If you like an item of clothing and it is not in your size, don't worry, they will normally make it to your size within 24 hours, with any amendments you want, and you won't pay much more (if anything) than the 'off the peg' price

Mosquitos, sun screen and plug adapators!

by datapanik

Mosquito repellent for malarial areas, sun lotion and a hat (tropical sun is very intense even through clouds). A plug adaptor is useful though I found that buying one locally was much cheaper than the overpriced adaptors on sale at Heathrow.
