Travel light - come back fully suited

by scubajensen

Next time when I will travel to Sri Lanka I will come with one set of cloth, snorkel, fin and mask only and spend my first day cloth shopping in Colombo at ODELS. You can buy an enormous amount of close - especially 2nd selection of expenisve brands like Banana Republic, GAP, Tommy Hilfinger - for such a cheap price you can't believe it. (We 2 brought roughly 30kg cloth with us as we did shopping the last day). Slide films are very difficult to buy - better bring sufficient material with you.

Something to cover your shoulders and your legs when you want to visit the temples. A sari or a sarong are easy to wrap around. Also socks, because the temple floors can be hot! Sunscreen and mosquito repellant. Photographic material (more than you expect to be needing!). Ballpoints for the children.

You do not need to bring much in the way of clothes with you because most of the things that you need can be bought cheaply here. You might want to bring some warm clothes if you intend to travel in the hill country and maybe a light mac for when it rains.

the tropics

by Igraine

Since you are in the tropics wear light comfortable clothes. Bring a jacket or sweater for inside buses and freezing hotel lobbies. If you went on vacation as i did bring some evening wear. Shorts are not wel looked on to with dinner. Sunscreen and aftersun lotion Dont forget to bring film, you can buy film but i am not sure about the quality.

Wear breathable fabrics -- 100% cotton is the best! Anything even slightly synthetic, no matter how light, will literally stick to you! Medication for stomache ailments is a must. So are malaria pills. And be sure to get the proper innoculations before you go.

Pack light and bring a small bag. You don't want (or need) too much stuff to worry about. Wear light, blow-through clothing that will dry quickly. You don't need anything but sandals, unless you are going to be hiking in the hills, in which case basic approach shoes are more than enough. If it rains in Sri Lanka, you get completely drenched, but it's very warm so I never cared too much about it. You also dry rather quickly. Toilet paper is not universal in Sri Lanka, so bring a roll if you need it. Most things can be bought quite easily, and VERY cheaply, in all the major cities and surrounding areas. If you're in the cities, you can probably buy almost anything you need, but it's often pricey and the quality may be questionable (sometimes you find brand-names that you've never seen before).

Remember when it rains, it rains! Don't forget the insect repellant - get something with deet in pens and stationery for the children (and their parents!) The Sri Lankans value education highly, but school supplies are expensive and sometimes hard to find. I have one child (now doing postgraduate study) who still writes to me annually after giving him a biro fifteen years' ago.

Tropical climate at the coast where the temp is as high as 30c and high humidity. It's crispy cool in the centre of the hill country and then the temp may fall to 16c or even lower at the Adam's Peak. So depends on where you go, you may need warm clothing, windbreaker, warm socks, umbrella....
