Packing List

A backpack is great, but since you can't physically see what's on your back, it could be opened by prying hands before you can say 'Nuwara Eliya.' A lock may help, too, but beware of razor blades. If you plan on visiting temples or religious sites and plan on wearing shorts, bring along a sarong to cover your legs (otherwise you'll have to rent one). And a shirt or shawl to cover bare shoulders. You'll have to remove your shoes, too, so don't wear anything you'll have to spend 30 minutes tying up. And socks may keep your feet from searing on hot stone walkways. Your favorite non-aerosol bug spray; little pocket packs of kleenex (not so common there); a hankie to mop your brow in the humidity; Malaria and Hepititis medication (see your doctor because the kind you get in Sri Lanka make you puke) plenty of batteries for your camera, because the batteries there aren't as powerful Girls,...

Took one pair of brown leather loafers to Sri Lanka. I could wear them for walking comfortably or getting dressed up. A pair of those 'flip flop' sandals is handy also. A lot of people wear them there. On the beach or when visiting temples you will need to take your foot wear off a lot. I had a pair of those pants with the legs that zip on and off. Short pants were all I needed but when you visit some of the temples you should wear long pants. When I went into a temple I would zip on the leggings. I did not have them at Temple of the Tooth because my luggage was lost for a while and had to rent a sarong to wear. Before I went I cleaned out my desk and took all the give away ball point pens I had picked up at conventions and tech shows. They are all still in Sri Lanka. People seemed to want them. I don't know if they collect them or resell them but I was often being asked for a pen. A...

take a medium size rucksack or travel-bag. your bag should not be the bulky type. you'll take a lot of busses, preferably the smaller and faster 'intercity-busses', there is NO room for your luggage except under your own seat or on your knees. unlike other countries, they don't store luggage on the roof. but bring a foldable extra-bag for your new clothes. good walking shoes, medium high for ankle-protection. you'll need them to climb Sigiriya-Rockfortress, wander around dusty ancient-cities-paths and explore rainforest-areas and national-parks.you can buy an umbrella in Sri Lanka. if you want to hike and walk with your rucksack in the rain, bring a well-fitting raincape from home. I find raincapes to sticky, hot and humid. and I don't walk around with my gear when it is pouring ;-) tampons and condoms. bring one set spare-batteries. it's always safer to buy film at home, where it is...

Medium-size backpack and money belt are useful to have. Women should definitely be modest if they don't want to be harrassed. Otherwise, if you are on the beach feel free to wear swimsuits/shorts. It's hot & humid in most parts of Sri Lanka, but a sweater might be useful if you're checking out tea country. As far as medication, bring anti-diarrheal pills, aspirin, acetaminophen, topical anti-biotics. I would definitely invest in an first aid kit. With regards to toiletries, bring your own brand of feminine protection. Film is cheap, but the quality is not great. Bring your own swimsuits. The selection is not flattering to any figure. Sunglasses are a must. Most of the locals do walk around with umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun. Good walking shoes/sandals are also a must. However, I would advise against leaving anything unattended since they seem to get stolen easily.

Inexperienced travelers take note:Always carry your essential documents -- passports, money, credit cards, and air tickets -- on your person. Under no circumstances should you pack them, whether in your hand luggage or your checked bag. To do so invites disaster.

for the rainforest

Salt, long trousers and plenty of water. Imagine yourself as a bulge of water, bones and meat and then understand why you’ll look so tempting for the animals in the rainforest.
