    `Beautiful scenic train

    by jo104 Written Mar 20, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As at March 2015 the times from Elle are departure 6.40am (6hrs), 9.24am (6hr30min) and 10.57am (6hr15min) arrives at Peridiniya
Exporail is Airconditioned and costs LKR1800 one way incl meal & free tea or coffee luxuary recliner seats,
child LKR 1400 (only available on 10.57 train) www.exporail.lk - free wifi decent toilets
Rajadhini express LKR1150 Air Conditioned coach with recliner seats www.rajadhani.lk - free wifi decent toilets
    also only on 10.57am train
Observation class to be booked well in advance no A/C but big observation window in the front in my opinion if you do not have a seat in front its not worth paying the extra LKR1250
    1st class is airconditioned available on 6.40am & 9.24am LKR420
2nd class which is the class I often travel LKR230
    3rd class LKR130
Stunning views although you will be travelling backwards if you choose the observation carriage
Breezy enough with the windows open so A/C not essential. Travel through tea plantations and see beautiful waterfalls. When you get close to Nuwar Eliya the weather may be quite nippy so best keep a jersey close by.

    The Mountain Train

by DSwede Updated Jan 26, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A vast majority of people passing through Ella will be taking the train to and/or from Ella. The train goes through the high mountains, winding slowly along the steeps, with views of the tea plantations and many little villages.

The tourist agents will book all the tourists in the first class train, since there it is supposed to be more comfortable and has air conditioning. Depending on how long you are on the train, there is also a meal included.

While I will admit that some good views were to be seen, I know that many other people on the train including myself were disappointed with the difference between the views promised and those we actually had. The first class cabin actually has the smallest windows on the train (second class windows open wide since there is no A/C). Most seats had obstructed or partial views. And on our particular journey, all the seats faced backwards. That in my mind is not on par how the tourism industry is trying to set the standard to by attracting more business. The seats are assigned by the ticket, so if the train is full, you have no options to change seats. But if you have any choice, I'd recommend the north side of the train (is a east/west moving train).

Sitting on the south, in a seat with obstructed view, I saw nothing for the first ~2.5 hours of the trip. It was only the last 30 minutes where there were a couple quick glances. In all honesty, while it does add the novelty of traveling by historic train, the views can be equally as nice by car depending on the road.
