We have just returned from a 14 night holiday in Sri Lanka. We stayed at The Bentota Beach Hotel which was a little bit average, but the holiday was lifted a little by the number of great activities available in the area. We went water skiing and did a river safari, but by far the best activity was a trip to Koggala Turtle Hatchery. We had planned...more
The beach is a superb stretch of golden sand. Although there are a string of resort hotels here, the beach was clean & tidy, the buildings are mainly hidden by palm trees too. I visited the beach early in the morning and at sunset, there were a few locals selling things, the ones I encounted were neither pushy or persistant.more

One should not miss a morning or evening excursion to "Brief gardens", a wonderful estate, owned by a former Sri Lankan architect and artist, who lived there with his lover(s?) and died 1992. The estate and park have been bequeathed to his gardener/ servant, who still owns the place and gives interesting tours.Just take a tuc-tuc or taxi in Bentota...more
This little place at Bentota beach gathers turtle eggs and place them in their premise for the eggs to hatch. After the little turtles have hatched, they will then be safely released to the ocean. The short guided tour costs 100 rupees per adult. Children enter for free. Normally, they will have several species of turtles on display and visitors are...more
I thought this place was cool. They do a lot of good work. They pay locals for all eggs they recover from beech than they hatch them and release them after 3 days because they have a greater chance of survival. They have some permanent residents including a fully grown blind albino turtle. Abs huge!!!more
The Brief Garden actually covers over 2 hectacres, so you could easily while away a morning here, admiring how the other half must have lived. The caretaker who shows you around the property, worked for Bevis Bawa when he lived here also. He has great respect for his old employer. Not sure who owns the property now, but it is run as a museum.more

My partner likes simple food which is not too spicy while I love the local fare. In many restaurants only one of us went away happy. The Waterside Hotel and Restaurant is a new boutique villa, recently opened Summer 2007. The restaurant is open to the garden and housed by a tall Sri Lankan timber roof and overlooks the garden, pool and river. Ratu (it means red) is a young man who’s family operate several 3-wheelers (AKA Tuk Tuks) from the railway crossing at Bentota. Ratu is a 'streetwise' but honest guy who will do his best to get you anything you want from a decent bar to a trip inland. Of course he has a business to run but he won’t cheat you, he wants visitors to have a good time...more
Ranga-Wine Stores is certainly one of the most modern and well-assorted on Sri lanka's westcoast. Liquors of local origin, some imported brands and a small assortment of wines are waiting for the well-off customer.
Unfortunately not all of the shop-employees are meeting those high standards:
it happened to me and some other guests frequently,(easily to be classified as tourists), who tried to buy the excellent local Arrak, that an overcharge of somewhat more than 100% has been (or has been tried to be) applied.
(Mendis 3 years Arrak sells countrywide for SL-Rupees 900,-the price charged was yet SLR 1875,-)
At Least Do This: 1. Do not enter the shop with your taxi - or 3-wheel-driver; he seems to participating at your buy.
2. Before buying any liquor, consult the barman of your hotel; he usually will be well informed about the valid prices!
3. Do NOT go into a discussion with the shop's employees, they will suddenly claim to speak only the local language/dialect
Alternative: Ask the barman of your hotel or your host where to buy. AVOID this shop, just to stay on the safe side !
4. Call the local, helpful tourist-police (below)

Bentota village is full of locals trying to make some money from showing you around the place and some of them get agressive if you are not interested. There are many kids unattended and they call you Bon bon or Money- money. Really unpeleasant experience. What annoys me, is the "commission boys" in Aluthgama. Their "base" is around the fish market and the railway crossing. They will approach you and offer to show you around. If you don't go shopping, they will expect a fee for the "guided" tour. But if you go shopping with them, you will pay 20-30% more than you should pay. Even when you decline...more

Hi Molly, find below some remarks about "summer in Bentota"- I found in my favorite hotels information-material. It is very close to Bentota Beach Hotel, so their comments are valid for both hotels:"In Sri Lanka, our experience has been that even during the time of the European summer i.e. from May to October, there is ample sunshine on the...more
Besides taking a Tuc-Tuc or a taxi to reach the nearby attractions, a whole round-trip to the cultural triangle in Sri-Lankas "midlands" is strongly recommended. To get a hassle-free and totally individual roundtrip, up until now I used the excellent services of a Colombo agency, LANKA VACATIONS.The owners, Mrs and Mr Farook care for very useful...more
