for local travel aroun unawatuna, for example to galle, the bus is ok if you travel without big luggage, just give 20 of 25 rps per person.
with the big luggage is more difficult because sometimes the busses are crowded,to mirissa we took a tuk-tuk for about 1000rps,I tell always the drive rthat is must drive slow, safe and defensief

there are some trains a day with a 2° class from colombo to galle for about 250 rps.
2°class is good travelling because you get a seat.
some trains have only 3°class and they can be very crowded
from colombo fort there are trains at 8.35 ,10.30 and 14.05(starts maradana 13.40),15.50

From the Galle bus stand, its a 15 to 20 min ride to Unawatuna. Get down at Yaddehimulla Junction (Vt'er sambawalk has got a pic aswell on the tip) its a small turn frm the main road.

It takes about Rs 12 on a bus ride and there are regular buses back to Galle. I stayed 3 days in Galle and 2 days in Unawatuna and the bus was very convinient to move back n fro.

Tuk tuk

Unawatuna is a really small coastal town which can be covered on foot. Though tuk tuk is available, it isnt needed.

You can use tuk tuk after a long day at the beach and feel tired walkin back to the hotel, and dont forget the all powerful Asian rule - ALWAYS BARGAIN.

You'll hardly notice Unawatuna Wella Dewala Road from the main coastal road, so make sure you recognise this entrance if you are coming by bus. The town is only 10-15 mins east from Galle. Taking certain buses for Rs10. Some express buses to east direction do not take you, so ask first if the bus will stop. If travelling from this junction to Galle by bus, flag any bus and get on board as long as they stop. Rs10.

As for tuk tuk, they usually ask for Rs200 at start. My price would be Rs100-130. (Happy bargaining).

Easy to get here

In the past Unawatuna has been referred to in awed terms - one of those mystical beaches that only the lucky and intrepid few will stumble across. In reality it's extremely easy to get to and practically on the main road. From Colombo, take a car/bus/train to Galle. From Galle, if you're on a very low budget then you can get a bus (any going east in the vague direction of Matara) for a few rupees. Best bet is to get a three wheeler from Galle - about 150 rupees and a 15 minute ride.
