A cheap package deal with reasonable accommodation can work out cheaper than a flight only deal, so for less adventurous independent travellers booking a package deal and using the resort hotel as a base while you explore the country can give the best of both worlds.

With a package deal you will be met at the airport after your long flight and chauffeured to your hotel where you can sleep and spend a few days acclimatizing. When you’re ready to hit the road you can leave documents such as flight tickets and anything else you do not need to carry with you in your hotel, allowing you to travel relatively light.

You can also go back to your air conditioned hotel for a few days if the heat and hassle of travel starts getting you down and to relax for a few days before heading home.

There is a lot to see and do in Sri Lanka and it is a relatively safe and easy country in which to get around, so get a bag on your back and see where you end up. Use local buses and trains for transport, local inns and rest houses as your accommodation and local people as your guides - fantastic.

There is more info on getting around in Sri Lanka on my home and travel pages

  • Dagoba in Anuradhapura - Sri Lanka
    Dagoba in Anuradhapura
    by nepalgoods
Anuradhapura has been the capital of ancient Sri Lanka for about 1400 years until the 10th Century A.D. At the height of its glory , this civilization spread its influence from the Tiber to the Yellow Sea. It covered ssome 20 square miles and had a population variously estimated at several tens of thousands.

After the 10th century Anuradhapura was more and more forgotten and finally covered by the jungle. Only the Holy Bo-Tree, the descendant of the Bo-Tree, under which Buddha found enlightenment, was continually attended.

This ancient Bo-Tree (Ficus Religiosa) can still be seen and is still worshipped today.

Modern Anuradhapura is not as big as the ancient capital , so in and around the modern city you can find a lot of riuns and old temples.

Pinnawela, about 80 km northeast of Colombo, is regarded as the biggest herd of captive elephants in the world. Among the elephants is one that lost a foot when it stepped on a mine. Another is blind and is totally reliant on humans. The elephant herd in Pinnawela makes the journey to the river twice a day to bathe under the eyes of the tourists. For a few Sri Lankan rupees they are allowed to touch the animals. The sound of cameras clicking increases everytime one of the young elephant babies splashes about in the water. But anyone who wants to take a picture of the babies feeding in the orphanage has to pay extra for the privilege. The elephants won't cause any troble but no tip and expect the mahouts to make things difficult!

Dambulla is a small town located at a distance of 19 km from Sigriya on the Sigriya-Kandy road. Dambulla has over 80 caves in the surrounding and some of them have been used by the monks as meditation locations. Major attraction is the Dambulla Rock Temple consisting of five cave temples dating back to the 1st century BC. The temples contain many statues and paintings. Hindu statues are believed to be of the 12 century AD and the latest paintings are of the late 18-century.
We were told heads have to be left uncovered and this applied to a group of muslim school girls as well who had their heads coverd with the hijab.

  • Sigiriya - Sri Lanka
    Sigiriya
    by nepalgoods
Raising form the deep green of a plain the rock of Sigiriya is a stunning sight. It seems, as if no access is possible to the top of the rock. But in the 5th century it has been a fortification of a mad king. Kasyapa was the eldest son of Anuradhapura's King Dhatusena. Kasyapa demande that his father reveal the wealth he was convinced had been hidden. Dhatusena took the young usurper to the bund of the Kalawewa, the greatest of his irrigation works, below which lived a venerable monk who had been his teacher and companion of many years. "There" said Dhatusena, pointing, "are all the treasures that I possess." "Slay my father!" cried an outraged Kasyapa. The former king was walled alive within his tomb.

Fear, arrogance and a delusion of divinity drove Kasyapa to construct his palace on Sigiriya Rock He only lived there 11 years and was defeated by his half-brother Moggalana, who instantly moved the capital back to Anuradhapura.

  • Gal Vihara - Sri Lanka
    Gal Vihara
    by nepalgoods
From the 11th to 13th century the capital of Pollonaruwa followd the times of ancient Anuradhapura. The riuns of Polonnaruwa are fairly well preserved. There are lots of old Buddhist temples spread in an area of lush green at a artificial lake.

Even though the temples are riuns now, they are still respected as places of worship. So you have to take off your shows, if you want to enter them.

Most famous are this Buddhas. It is called the "Gal Vihara - the Rock Shrine". At one time the Gal Vihara Buddhas were enclosed by brick buildings.

  • Kandy Temple of the Tooth - Sri Lanka
    Kandy Temple of the Tooth
    by nepalgoods
Kandy was originally known as Senkadagala, after a hermit who is said to have lived here.

Kandy is about 488m high in the hills. The climate and the surroundings are very nice. But the most important center of Kandy is the Temple of the Tooth. In the 4th century the tooth of Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka. In 1590 it was brought to Kandy, where the temple was build for it.

Few people ever see the Tooth Relic itself. What you can see in the temple on special occasions is the great dagoba-shaped Karanduwa, a gold-plated reliquary.

At one time, the inner sanctum was accessible only to the king and certain monks. Today, during the hours of puja (aboput 6 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.) visitors can see the reliquary from the "Hall of Beatific Vision".
