Mount Lavinia Hotel

by schmechi

The Mount Lavinia Hotel in Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia is worth a visit, even if you do not want to take a room there. The luxury hotel is built in colonial style and the personel still does everything to keep its colonial ambiance. From the terrace you'll have a great view to Colombo's harbour and the submissive waiters, suited in old-fashioned uniforms will do anything, that you feel like a real British Sir of the 19th century.Apart from this may be anachronistic appearance, the hotel is also a meeting point. For example there are open-air movie screenings and theme-parties.Personally I did not take a room there, so I can't say anything about the quality of the rooms.

Unawatuna

by schmechi

Unawatuna is a beach resort located in the south-west of Sri Lanka. Probably it is not the most beautiful beach resort of the island but it has some great advantages: It is pretty near to Colombo and so it can be used for day trips and it is a cheap ressort, especially because the first travellers, who visited this area were backpackers. There is also a dagoba in Unawatuna which tops the impression of this beach ressort off and makes it to a very lovely place to relax.During the rainy season there will be dangerous currents, so don't swim too far outside.

Nuwara Eliya-Sri Lankan tea country

by mallyak

Situated at around 2000m above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations Nuwara Eliya is the main hill resort of Sri Lanka and the heart of the tea industry. Once a pleasure retreat of the European planters the town is still very much an English town with many English style bungalows and buildings. We viewed some of the most spectacular waterfalls and the whole place reminded us of the western ghats in india.A visit to one of the tea factories is worth it .They do not expect payment but a tip in a common box and purchasing some tea is the right thing to do.Alos nearby is a Sita temple where lord Ramas wife sita was imprisoned by the Demon Ravana.

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage Sri Lanka

by mallyak

Pinnawela, about 80 km northeast of Colombo, is regarded as the biggest herd of captive elephants in the world. Among the elephants is one that lost a foot when it stepped on a mine. Another is blind and is totally reliant on humans. The elephant herd in Pinnawela makes the journey to the river twice a day to bathe under the eyes of the tourists. For a few Sri Lankan rupees they are allowed to touch the animals. The sound of cameras clicking increases everytime one of the young elephant babies splashes about in the water. But anyone who wants to take a picture of the babies feeding in the orphanage has to pay extra for the privilege. The elephants won't cause any troble but no tip and expect the mahouts to make things difficult!

Major attraction is the Dambulla Rock Temple consisting of five cave temples dating back to the 1st century BC. The temples contain many statues and paintings. Hindu statues are believed to be of the 12 century AD and the latest paintings are of the late 18-century.We were told heads have to be left uncovered and this applied to a group of muslim school girls as well who had their heads coverd with the hijab.

SIGRIYA

by mallyak

LIONS ROCK!Located in the north-central province of Sri Lanka, Sigriya-a city, palace and garden complex centering a 200 metre high rock-is unofficially known as the 8th wonder of the world. Literally, the word Sigriya means the Lion Rock. Sigriya is Sri Lanka's most recognizable landmark and has been declared as a World Heritage Site. The 650 ft monolith was once a rock fortress and a royal citadel from 477 to 495 AD. The most significant feature of the Rock would have been the Lion staircase leading to the palace garden on the summit. All that remains now are the two colossal paws and a mass of brick masonry that surround the ancient limestone steps and the cuts and groves on the rock face give an idea of the size and shape of the lion figure.Climbing up the rock we saw the Mirror Wall, a highly polished rock surface that has weathered the times to shine and reflect even today. In a...
