Charming way of making money ?????

by nathicka

Snake charmers and monkey keepers are not unusuall on Sri Lanka. Its great fun! But dont forget the charmer/keeper wants money. They are making their living this way! How much? Depends on the keeper and you. AND dont forget the animals dont allways live under the best conditions. In Pinnawela a man had a snake and my mom had it around her neck. That was a nice experiance for her, so we made some pics and gave the man some tips. But when in Koggala I saw a boy walking up and down the hot beach for hours every day whit his animals. (a monkey, and 2 snakes) I talked to the boy and he told me that, as long as tourist take pictures and as long as he can make money, he will work like this. Maybe its better not to take pictures???? Its up to you. I didnt take any more pictures. I gave the monkey some food and water.

Not really a lot in Sr Lanka

by Sambawalk

My personal opinion is that there are not many tourist traps in Sri Lanka, in comparsion with its neighbouring countries. Sri Lankans are generally genuine and quite friendly without much of the second thought of trapping the tourists. (This is simply based on my personal experience and I can't speak for all).Of course there are touts around in major tourist spots and areas. Exercise good judgement to ensure that you have enjoyable holiday.

Only USD at duty free shops

by POJ

I was planning to spend my remaining rupees at the transit area shops before departure. To my surprise, the shop selling liquors, foodstuffs only accepts USD.Also, the Odel outlet there only accepts rupees for items costing 1000 rupees or less.What a strange practice!!!Needless to say, I stll have a small wad of rupees sitting somewhere ...

Avoid the spice gardens

by trisanna

Please avoid the spice gardens. This is a big tourist trap. There are very few places in Sri Lanka that have no admission price that aren't tourist traps. You walk around with your guide. Looking at tamarind, nutmeg, and coconut trees. He explains the virtues of each spice in Sri Lankan culture -mostly for ayurvedic purposes. They give you some hot chocolate with spiced tea.The spice walk is nice, but they realized that they can't make much money selling people spices. Instead, the whole experience is for their spiced tonics. They try and give you a shoulder massage with one of their tonics-supposed to relieve muscle aches. They tonics start around 25 usd. They say they make them, which i doubt since i saw almost the same thing in the central market in Kandy. Plus there are spice gardens all over the country and they all look like tourist traps. We bought one tonic out of pity and some...

Weda-medura Ayurvedic centre in Kandy

by bijo69

Don't go try this place if you're looking for an Ayurvedic treatment...it's horrible. The whole treatment is badly done, the oil is old and the centre is filthy. Pay a bit more and try those at *****hotels.

Kandy: traditional dances

by call_me_rhia

Walk around the lake at around 5 pm - look out for where over 15 tour buses are parked - and you'll have found the location for the very "unique" kandyan dances. You'll be one of the chosen few (hundreds) to see them Go if it's part of the package - this is my suggestion. If you have to pay extra for it, ask yourself if those dances are really worth your time and money it's possible to see "real" kandyan dances - so if you have the opportunity, go for it. In my case, on one of the nights we were staying at the hotel suisse, a traditional wedding reception took place in the ballroom. Everyone was welcome to watchit from the above balcony. Real Kandyan dancers were invited to dance at the wedding. It was authentic - it was cool!

Hassle

by suemac

When walking along the beach, town or village you will get stopped by the beach boys and locals. The locals are nice and friendly but beware if they ask if it's your first time in Sri Lanka . If it is don't tell them as they will try and sell you goods and trips at over the going rate.Locals will follow you and if you go into a shop they will pretend they have taken you there and get some commission! If your not in the mood for buying don't make eye contact and politely say "no thank you" which usually does the trick. If not then say "epa" meaning I don't want it.A tip for the over 50's, tell them your with Saga , they know Saga is all inclusive and trips are included so don't think you will be spending any money! If you do end up buying something look on the bright side. It probably won't have cost you much and you can give it to the aunty you don't like!

~~~ service tax ~~~
by matseb
Most hotels and restaurants demand a 10 % service charge. *** ____DON'T PAY IT___ for it is a fictional tax !!! *** ... declare you know that is doesn't have to be demanded nor paid for it is not legal! There is nothing they can do about your refuse. If they announce to call the Police (avery very rare case) then the Police can't do anything, too of course.
The Temple Of The Tooth
by mickeyjane1
Basically this is the temple which houses the tooth which was discovered after the cremation of Buddha.The king built a special shrine and enshrined the tooth relic.Very interesting stuff, and also very important in the culture and tourism in Sri Lanka, however we were greatly disappointed to find that when we got there it was the wrong time of day to be able to see it and basically what we got to see was a curtain!! To get to see the tooth, i was led to believe that you need to go at particular times of the day... check these out before you go, when the daily rituals are being carried out. These include........Offering of foodringing of the bellchamber and flower altar are cleanedand there are drummers drumming all through this service.Another thing to be warned about is that the security here is extremely high, you will have your bags searched and also a body search before you enter...
NOT SNAKE CHARMING
by BerniShand
In Pinnawela near the elephant orphanage was a snake charmer, noticing my sons interest he placed the snake round his neck and invited us to take a photographwhen we had done so he told us the charge was 1000 rupees, but as he had not made any mention of a charge we refused to pay himwe were going to give him something before he demanded money, but because of the ridiculous amount he asked for and his agressive manner he got nothing
