Excellent Car and Driver Service

by carldietrich

After getting a recommendation from a friend who had been in Sri Lanka earlier, we wrote to Anil. He turned out to be a very knowledgeable person and friendly too. After many e-mails helping us plan our 12 day trip in Sri Lanka, we finally met him, at the Airport. And after being introduced to the driver, finally we were off !And we were certainly glad we made the choice to hire a car and driver, rather than travel by public transport, which seems to be in utter chaos. The plus points in having a car and driver are, one can stop when and where you want, and you can always choose the time you start and stop. And it is quite more comfortable too with the air conditioning on. The driver himself was a great guy called Mahesh, working for Anil's small company. He was very friendly, helpful and had a good knowledge of all the interesting places, and also what to avoid too.Visiting Pinnawala,...

Sri Lankan Hires

by PhilipNF

After reading about many car+driver services in Sri Lanka, we contacted a few who seemed ok. Eventually we chose Sri Lankan Hires, as their quick responses to our email inquiries gave us a lot of confidence in them, and their price was very reasonable. We also appreciated that they didn't lowball the price and then tack on extras. They were great in every respect. In fact, the one time we had to call from the road (we'd lost our driver's cellphone number and needed to contact him) their staff was quick, courteous, and helpful. Once on the road, we had to make a number of changes to our itinerary due to flooding in the Anaradapura and Polonarruwa areas. From the first day, our driver, Thilanka, put our safety first, but also did his best to get us where we had hoped to go. In Anaradapura, he found a local expert who could identify which roads were still open, and we were able to visit much...

Begum Tours

by scfang

I did not book any travel package from Singapore. I contacted Naim (Begum Tours) through a recommendation from Virtual Tourist. Naim, who speaks reasonable English, turned out to be a great driver and guide for our vacation in Sri Lanka. He took good care of our family for the whole trip (8 days). He arranged the itinerary of our land tour in Sri Lanka, picked us up from the airport, booked all the hotels and sent us back to the aiport for our flight back to Singapore. With his local knowledge, he brought us to a few interesting places that have yet to be discovered by tourists. After the 8-day trip, Naim has become our good friend and our kids like him very much.Check my hotel recommendation. Those were the hotels arranged by Naim and they are really good value for money.I strongly recommend Naim's service to anyone who needs a driver and a guide in Sri Lanka.Naim Hussain can be...

car/driver transport recommendation

by ppchard

The best advice i took from this website on sri lanka was hire a driver and vehicle, always go on recommendations, i found two for niam the driver, i checked them, e-mailed and spoke to him personally, to make our tour plans. He made our holliday, he gave us his soul to impart his knowlege and love about his country, its sites and culture .He will guide you on hotels, things to see, your safety, he will get you the best rates, save you time, change the itinerary as you go to suit your needs, you will not be dissapointed. He is a great family man who lost everything in the tsunami, give something back to his country and you will recieve more back from this man. e-mail me if you wish

Exellent, Knowledgeable, Driver/Guide

by ppchard

Self Driving - I have driven in many different countries without a problem. But after personally witnessing Sri Lankan driving skills, its definitely a challenge only for the locals.Buses - they are very cheep, always full to overflowing, very hot and often unroadworthy. But if you want the trill give them a go, but make it a short trip, and sit in the middle.Trains - You must at some part of trip take a train ride, my advise is that you research the best part, and each get a window seat on either side of the train, there are some of the most amazing views. A first class carried is not worth the extra cost unless the train is busy.Touring - We found a Driver/Guide on the net, that had been recommended by a previous traveler, We were so lucky, he drove us so calmly , and so safely, he informed us of all the best sights to see and when. He got us the best prices on entry costs and secured...

by train

Somehow we felt we had to have a train journey. We decided to use it to return to Colombo from Kandy: 80 kilometres covered in over 2.30 hours. Let's say that the journey was different: we bought 2 first class tickets for 400 rupees (4 dollars) and went to board the train... ops, we can't find the carriage. Where's our carriage? We're shown to the back of the train, but it cannot be, we walked past it: no first class. Oh, yes, indeed there was - but it was so old, dirty and badly kept that I had assumed it was the second class. No way! OK so we found our seats and enjoyed the very bumpy ride to Colombo, on a train and railway track built by the English at the turn of the century, and never remodernised since then. never cleaned, either - if I am to judge by the state of the toilet (1st class toilet, I want to stress it again). Impossible to use. The plus side of the journey is the...

Huur geen auto zonder chauffeur

by Geert18

Low cost long-haul flights to Colombo

by permanentvacation

Sri Lanka is now easy accessible thanks to some good low-cost connections. From Europe, Fly Dubai and Air Arabia (both low-cost airlines) are flying to Colombo from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gocen (the small airport form the asian side of the town) via Dubai, respectively Sharjah . If you can, I recommend you to fly directly to this airport, as the distance between Ataturk and Sabiha Gocen Airport is long (around 80 km – minimum 3 hours). If you are travelling from Asia or Australia, there is Air Asiawho offers a non-stop flight to Colombo from Kuala Lumpur (the same company flies from/to KL in almost every town of East and South-East Asia plus 3 cities in Australia).
