Buses are cool

by permanentvacation

Buses are going all night between Colombo and Matara (in south) and are extremelly cheap. You’ll pay around 1.5 US$ to go with the air-con bus from Colombo to Unawatuna, or around 0.9 US$ for the regular ones. Transportation in Sri Lanka doesn’t offer a tourist scheme. Either you go with these buses, either you go with a private car (this is really expensive – around 70 US$ for the same distance). If you can’t get in drivers’ mood, and you afraid of their driving style (they seem not to care about anyone’s life, including theirselfs, but they have an internal, incomprehensible ration in what they are doing there), you can try the trains. Those are more confortable, more expensive, but not expensive. The problem is that you have a smaller number of options (there is only one train to Kandy and 3 to Unawatuna from Colombo).

The Best Van Driver in Sri Lanka

by youngja2

I'd like to recommend Bandu to anyone visiting Sri Lanka. Bandu owns an air-conditioned van that can seat up to 6 people comfortably. He is based in Nuwera Eliya and can either transport you safely to the local sites such as Worlds End and Horton Plains and the local tea factories or, he can pick you up at the airport and transport you wherever you want around the island. Bandu speaks good English and is extremely helpful, courteous and on-time. His prices are keen and you can trust that he won't rip you off. He know so much about Sri Lanka that he is more than just a driver - he opens your eyes to the magic of the country. I would not hesitate to recommend Bandu to anyone.

Colombo Fort To Hikkaduwa

by wickynwc

Travelling by train would be the most interesting, easiest & Cheapest way in Sri Lanka. My recent trip to Sri Lanka ( Hikkaduwa ) was awsome & it was an one in a lifetime voyage. Travelling by train to Hikkaduwa is the easiest & relaxing way as it cost not more that USD 10 per pax per way. from the start till the end you will see the view of Indian ocean.most of the hotels in hikkaduwa are expensive as the travellers traffic if so high. I rented a private summer cottage which cost me about USD 150.00 for 2 nights & 3 days 1 DBL. Make sure you will travel nearby areas by TUK TUK ( trishaw) which is quite cheap & fun.the beach runs about 8km where you can relax without any disturbances & the variety of cusine is great for both spicy lovers & sweet & sour.do not forget to bargain whenever you buy as the mark up is about 40% but you'll get good souveniers for sure. things you must do Enjoy...

Excellent guide with driver

by valdemarb

My wife and I visited Sri Lanka this summer. We can highly recommend Karnal de Silva as a guide. He will organize a minivan with a driver and will plan a round trip for you with all the highlights of Sri Lanka. We had more or less planned everything ourselves before coming. Karnal was fine with that and still added a lot of value. He is very knowledgeable and will do anything in his power to make your stay a pleasant one.His email is: karnal3@hotmail.com

Airport

by tim07

The main airport is Bandaranaike International Airport and is situated some 30 km north of Colombo. I found arriving and departing quick & easy. The airport has a wide selection of shops, many selling traditional souvenirs. There are also plenty of currency exchanges and in the departure area there was a good size restaurant which had a wide selection of meals. The roads near to the airport are in a pretty good condition. If you are travelling to the aiport from a resort to the south of Colombo be prepared for possibly getting stuck in heavy traffic as you drive through the capital.

Purchasing train tickets

by erikdr

Booking a train ticket ahead in Lanka or buying just before travelling?a) There is no need to prebook for all 2nd class seats except in the ICE trains Colombo-Kandy and Colombo-A'Pura. b) There is only need to prebook for 1st class (solely available for the Colombo-Kandy-Badulla line and for ICE) and the mentioned 2nd class ICE. And the night trains in case you want a sleeper compartment.Prebooking is possible1] From 10 days before the travel date2] In person at the originating station of the TRAIN. So e.g. Peradeniya-Badulla reservations need to be bought in Colombo.A local agent can do 2] for you for a surcharge. And yes, now they are working on some kind of SMS/mobile way of buying the tickets/reservations but not yet seen any details.See www.railway.gov.lk for the timetables and prices

TRAIN TRAVEL

by ViajesdelMundo

Unfortunately, the trains have been let to deteriorate for many years without a lot of upkeep. This is mostly due to the fact that the Government did not have needed funds because of the on-going civil unrest involving the LTTE (Tamil Tigers). Now that the war is over (May 2009), roads are being repaired, as well as train tracks, but it is anyone's guess as to when new carriages will be forthcoming. Be that as it may, train is still the best way to cover a lot of the long-hauls over the country, and one of the most popular is the COLOMBO-KANDY route, which, if all goes well, takes only about 2-1/2 to 3 hours. The Scenery is beautiful, as one climbs up into the hills. Some days, much of the view can be shrouded in fog, but mostly, one can see across the landscape.***If at all possible, going up to KANDY, get a seat on the right side of the train; or on the left if returning. One may need to...
