What to buy: Derek had a shirt made, by a tailor who lived behind our hotel. He was measured up & it was ready the next day. Very well made & only about £7.00!!

I bought myself 2 beautiful Saris, in Bentota town. When we returned Derek & I had a "Serendipity Party", just so I could wear my Sari ! (~_~)

Beruwala Warnings and Dangers

  • Beware of Sandflies !!

A short walk, - sometimes of not more than 2-3minutes - especially after a tropic rainfall on the sandy, humid beach of Bentota or Beruwela may result in 100s of "mosquito"-bites, before you realize it !In Beruwela - especially near to Bentota-river - Sandflies are common and dangerous to your wellbeing! • Sea swimming at Beruwela

DO NOT swim outside the reef which includes either end of the reef. The currents are very dangerous - there are eddies and whirlpools. A tourist was drowned while we were there and we were told it is a common occurrence. The part inside the reef is OK when the tide is out, but at other times, use the pool.

Beruwala Tourist Traps

  • Commission Boys

What annoys me, is the "commission boys" in Aluthgama. Their "base" is around the fish market and the railway crossing. They will approach you and offer to show you around. If you don't go shopping, they will expect a fee for the "guided" tour. But if you go shopping with them, you will pay 20-30% more than you should pay. Even when you decline...

  • Visit the crocodile-hunters

Between Beruwela and Bentota a sweet-water river hosts many species of lizards and even crocodiles.Although there are not much of them to find, local fishermen know very well where in the mangrove-jungles they live and breed. There is a heavy fine on killing crocodiles, so they usually are kept as "pets", at least as long as they are still small.
