    fishing in Sri Lanka

If you are passionate about fishing you should have a good holiday, I never fish in the UK but I do in Sri Lanka. you can use lures and fancy gear but I get good results with prawns, they are cheap and they really attract the fish. There is an amazing variety of fish particularly in sheltered waters and offshore around the reefs, I caught a parrot fish near Matara in January, it was so beautiful I felt guilty and won’t go for tropical species now. There seems to be less variety around the west coast resort but you may get some good sized Barramundi etc.

You don’t need to hire a boat every time you want to fish in the sea, I go sea fishing from some rocks near my friends house, you just need to know where and you can just look where the locals are fishing. In some parts of the country you can speak to the local guys who will be happy to take you to the best places but in a tourist resort everyone who comes and speaks to you will be a ‘beachboy’ these guys will find you anything, including a fishing trip and 90% of them are decent guys who will find you a good deal, it’s the 10% you need to watch.

Fron Bentota and Beruwala you will see a rocky island (on the Bentota side of the river) this looks like the perfect place to fish but you can’t fish from here because it is Temple grounds and therefore a sanctuary, if you kill even a fish here the Monks will not be happy (and in Sri Lanka it is not a good idea to upset the Monks).

The European summer is the south west monsoon and on this side of the island the weather is unpredictable and it can be quite good but the sea can get rough and the river can become a muddy torrent. If conditions at the estuary are bad and you still want to fish eithe head up river or travel up the coast for an hour to Bolgoda Lake.

if ou want to fish from a boat everything is here, from a deep-sea expedition to a few hours floating over the reef north of the lighthouse. To get the best price means sharing the cost so speak to the bored looking guys in your hotel or better still speak to the brown ones (with a good tan) they will have been there longest and will know what to pay for a fishing trip, they will also know which of the beach boys to trust to find you the best deal.

If you want to make your own arrangements walk along the beach to the estuary, every day there will be locals and their boats here just hanging out (early morning is best). They will ask you if you want a boat trip, my tip is to act like you don’t really care about a trip and carry on with your walk but maybe on your way back you ask them some details (where to go, how long etc) and of course how much, then you can do some business.
