Plumbing

by Kurtdhis

Taiwan has squat toilets. A squat toilet is basically a hole in the floor that flushes. They are OK but take a little getting used to. Bathrooms with squat toilets in Taiwan smell funny (not particularly bad; just funny) but then all of Taiwan smells funny, so that was not particularly disconcerting.

General Notes About Taiwan and its Language and Mo

by Kurtdhis

A significant fraction of the Taiwanese population does not speak the language very well. The native language of Taiwan is Taiwanese which is not like Mandarin Chinese and which is not like Cantonese. Many of the older people in the country do not speak much Mandarin and many of the younger people do not speak much Taiwanese. The languages are all written the same, however, so many TV programs in Taiwan are subtitled in Chinese. One thing that did cause a lot of trouble, even though we had been warned against it in advance, was that the Chinese hand gesture for `come here' looks exactly like the western hand gesture for `Go away, scoot, scat, scram!' In Hualien the poor hotel lady wanted us to come look at the rooms to see what we liked, and even though all three of us were standing there thinking that the Chinese hand gesture for `come here' looks just like the western gesture for...

Gaoliang

The favorite type of local fire water, which is around 130 proof. It is usually drinken straight up during Ganbei parties. As an added bonues, Gaoliang could easily be used as a suitable alternative for paint thinner or lawn mower fuel if the need ever arises...

general info

by atri

Taiwan is located in the Pacific Ocean only 160 km (120 miles) from Mainland China. The island straddles the Tropic of Cancer and offers a subtropical environment. Taiwan is only 394 km (236 miles) long and 144 km (86 miles) at its greatest width, but boasts a population of 23 million people, a progressive democratic government, a bustling economy, and an eclectic mix of old and new. The main language here is Mandarin Chinese, however many locals can also speak Taiwanese, or another aboriginal language. Although Taiwan is modern and somewhat westernized, many traditional things are still visible in daily life; lively street markets, worshipping in front of homes or offices, parades and holiday festivals. Taiwan offers six national parks and a number of recreational areas. Outdoor activities abound once you find your way out of the city and include hiking, white water rafting and soaking...

Betel Nuts

by kenmerk

If you ask yourself: "How can those truck drivers in Taiwan possible drive so fast?? The answer, in a word: BETEL NUTS.' These small narcotic fruits of the local plam tree can help any truck driver, who's been on the road for the last 36 hours, find that extra gear, and somehow push his rig well beyond the structural design limits of his truck....Remember if you see a red splotch of betel nut juice come flying out of the drivers side window of any vehicle here, it best to just give way and live to drive another day...(Coming soon: Betel Nut GirlsTip...)

Landmarks

by kenmerk

The two landmarks that you can always count on in Taiwan are (Suprising enough for those who haven't been here before): McDonald's and 7-11. Giving directions usually go something like this: Turn right at Mcdonalds, go straight pass two 7-11, left at the next Mcdonald, then park in front of the 3rd 7-11 on your right....They are EVERYWHERE....

Shei-Pa National Park is...

by Dulittle

Shei-Pa National Park is located at the convergence of Hsinchu, Miaoli and Taichung counties, which is also the heart of the Hsuehshan range. It covers an area of 76,850 hectares, which is about three times the size of metropolitan Taipei. As part of Shei-Pa National Park, the Wuling and Kuanwu Recreation Area both familiar to Taiwan residents, will allow everyone to get close to nature. The mountain scenery is beautiful.

Taiwan's 'economic miracle',...

by AndreasK

Taiwan's 'economic miracle', actually the result of hard work and good planning, has put a modern face on cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung. Where rice paddies stretched for miles only 30 years ago, today you will find high-rise office buildings and modern department stores.Agriculture contributes only 3% to Taiwan’s GDP, down from 35% in 1952. Traditional labor-intensive industries are being moved offshore and replaced with more technology-intensive industries. Taiwan struggles between traditional life and rapidly changing modern urbanity. But Taiwan is still Chinese at heart, with an underlying current of traditional lifestyles and culture, where ancient and modern co-exist.In Taiwan's humid summer, when temperatures climb above 35 C, people seek relief in the mountains or at the shore. The island is blessed with fine beaches, the more popular of which include Yenliao, Fulung, and Green...
