Betel Nuts. They are sold...

by choberygoo

Betel Nuts. They are sold everywhere in Taiwan. In many places, Betel Nuts are sold by half-naked girls in a little glass-box kiosk. This shocks many foreigners, as if this display of humanity is somehow strange to them or it's only a Taiwanese thing. Please. I am fed up with travellers that don't want to admit or fail to see the same humanity that simply comes in different expressions all over the world. Narrow-minded people are exactly the reason why we have wars, racism, sexism, and all the other stupidity. I guess that's also all very human but it doesn't have to be. Okay, onto the main topic. I personally was amazed by the betel nuts when I first tried it. Why? I just couldn't believe that such a potent and enchanting drug is sold cheaply everywhere in Taiwan, 24hrs a day. However, I think it definitely beats prohibition, and the fact that the Taiwanese society functions perfectly...

Visit the night markets. The most famous night market is Shilin. Take the MTR to Shilin or Jian Dian station and it is within walking distance. Remember to try the different foods there. Eat whatever your stomach allows! There is just too much great food to be found !

wander the streets of Taipei....get lost and find many interesting experiences. The people are amazing! The people. On our trip around the island, we came accross a festival that was occuring over a 10 day period. It was in a small village. We drove in and stated looking around. Before long, we were invited to eat dinner and share in the celebration! We ended up spending the night and got to enjoy the ceremony that only occurs every 100 years! The only other outsiders were a camera crew from National Geographic.

Taroko Gorge. You can stay in Hualien and take a tour, bus, or taxi from here to see the gorge. The tour was actually fun because it was in Chinese which I don't speak and all the people were Taiwanese. Taiwanese go out of their way to be friendly and someone offered to translate for me. And that way we got to speak to everyone on the tour bus and ask about the different parts of Taiwan that they were from. Hualien has a nice downtown area where you can shop until 10pm and night markets for eating.

Kenting. Nice beach and lots of street vendors at night selling food. There's lots of small hotels that are really nice and cheap (1000 TWD).Make sure you have Taiwanese dollars before coming here unless you're staying in the big hotels that will exchange money for you. There are no banks in Kenting itself and the closest one is a bus ride away.

by isolanthui

need a public telephone card? Here is one with Chinese painting and poem. 100 units costs NTD100 (proximally US$3.00). You can buy it in a post office or convenience store everywhere; there are more than 1000 stores of 7-eleven alone.

***Chinese Opera*** People in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan love Chinese Opera. So does my grandparents. They can understand the difficult sound of Chinese which play in Chinese Opera. The Origins of Chinese Opera --The roots of Chinese Opera are obscure, but historical records reveal that performances combining song and dance were popular as far back as the Warring States period (403-222 BC). A few centuries later, during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 219), story-telling was blended with dance to produce an elementary form of musical drama. Emperor Hsuan Tsung of the T'ang Dynasty (AD 618 - 907) was a great patron of the arts, and with his sponsorship a training center for actors was established. The center was known as 'the Pear Garden,' and since this time Chinese opera performers have been referred to as 'disciples of the Pear Garden.'--From...
