    There is a tiled walk around the Dragon & Tiger Pagoda's which have some interesting and sometimes foreboding characters adorning the paths.

    This is the Tiger Zen tower of the two pagodas. Both towers have 7 floors which has the meaning of seven-leveled stupa of Buddhism.

    View from the Pagoda over Tsuo Ying.

    Tsuoying is a district of Kaohsiung and has many remains of seventeenth century military fortresses but Lotus Lake is still the main attraction.

    When driving out of the city, stop at the many roadside graves along the way. There were quite a few of these, although I am not sure our guide thought it was quite the thing to stop and take a photo.

    BUDDHISM was first preached in Northern India in early 5th century BC by Siddhartha Gautama, the 'Enlightened One'.

    Early on, the Buddhist community split into 2 major factions: ('Greater & Lesser Vehicles')
    1) Mahayana Tradition.
    Mahayana emphasizes universal salvation & a host of quasi-divinities called bodhisattvas. It was spread from India to China, Korea & then Japan.
    2) Theravada Tradition.
    Emphasizes meditation & monasticism. It became the primary religion of South East Asia; from Burma to Cambodia & in pre-modern times Indonesia.

    All forms of Buddhism share the same roots & are motivated by the quest to attain a contentment through mental, spiritual & moral development. All relate to the enlightenment experience of one man, the 'Buddha'.

    Building started on May 16, 1967, it is now a world renowned Buddhism teaching institution.

    According to Buddhism, Dharma offers a solution to the fundamental problems of human condition. Human existence is distinguished by the very fact that nothing is permanent.

    All is Duhkha! Therefore, the 1st step to a Buddhist path to awakening is to understand the foremost problem of human existence & to recognize all is duhkha.
