Your must be very alert when walking, the scooters that exist in the thousands also use the sidewalks to drive and park. Auto traffic is also bad, running red lights is common.
A subway being built may help but it will not be finished until 2007.

I could still clearly picture the tone/facial expression while my Canadian teacher told me how frightened he was when walking on the streets in Taichung. He was so scared by the traffics in Taichung, sometimes he complained that he would only dare to walk on the pedestrian, though not every road has one. I heard my classmates and myself laugh when he was talking about it. “Well…it is okay, can’t be that scary.” I wondered while giggling with other friends. Dead wrong.
“Not only foreigners would be frightened by the traffics in Kaohsiung!”
My first week in Kaohsiung was like taking the roller coaster. Grabbing my friend’s arm so tight, screaming sometimes, when I was crossing the road. People don’t seem to stop/slow down their speed while there is someone crossing the road…it’s just a maze that you finally find out that they do keep a distance with you (extremely short distance though). They don’t slow down because they know they are not going to squash you anyway…maybe the tip for crossing the road is to “put your head up and RUN!”

Traffic!!!! We have killer traffic in Kaohsiung. When you cross the street, PLEASE make sure you check every angle before you step out. People only obey the traffic regulations when the cops are standing at the corner, which is around the rush hour.

traffic,
There are thousands of scooters that seem unregulated as to traffic rules. They drive wherever they like and on sidewalks . Anywhere.
