    Island....

This is a place that should not be missed in Taiwan. A small volcanic island that is home to the Yami tribe of aboriginals.

It has probably the best preserved of the aboriginal cultures in Taiwan, some of the most striking scenery and definately the best diving. Cant wait to get a chance to get back over this way again.... (Pls see separate Orchid Island page for more...)

Located about 60 kilometers off the southeast coast of Taitung.

  • You will love this! Many of you might have already tried this, and I'm sure you all love it. One of the TV show here in Taiwan just remind me how lucky I am to be able to teach here in Taiwan.
The show is called 5 takes. There are five travellers who were chosen by the TV producers to travel around the world. Everyone of them has a budget of US$50 per day to spend, and they need to take the ideas from locals' recommendation. One of them tried teaching one day. And he said that was the happiest and the best day of his life.
So why don't you guys come out here and give it a shot. =D

    Me in a mud bath
    by pipercherokee
Just outside of Taipei nestled in the mountains, one can experience one of the many hotsprings that Taiwan has to offer. The one I visited, and for the life of me I can't remember the name, was situated up in the mountains, outdoors, overlooking endless green valleys and more mountains. If only it weren't so polluted there! Various bath types are available and men and women are separated as nudity is apparently the only option. I found the mud bath to be quite unique!

Lanyu is the ancestral home of the Thao tribe who were well known and feared for their raids on the Taiwanese mainland. The island is volcanic and covered in bush. On arrival at the airport there are likely to be locals on hand to offer you motorcycle rental and cheap accomodation. For an account of my time here check out my Orchid Island travelogue.

You can fly to Lanyu from Taitung or take a boat (about 4 hours)

Penghu is an archepelago roughly half way between China and Taiwan. It has a rich history with occupations by the Dutch the French and the Japanese. The terrain is quite different from mainland Taiwan being mostly flat and dry with grasslands and scrub and coral beaches. The Matsu Temple in Makong is the oldest in Taiwan. for an account of my time in Penghu check out my Penghu travelogue.

There are flights to Makong (Penghu's capital) from all the major Taiwanese cities and flights to Chimei from Kaohsiung. You can also get there by boat from Kaohsiung and Putai (near Chiayi)

Chigu is perhaps best known as a stop off on the migratory route of the black faced spoonbill. A local sign in Tainan county points the way to the "Black Faced Spoonbill Preserve" which left me wondering if this was something I could spread on my toast.

Also near Chigu is this "salt mountain", which is a popular site for local tourism. These are a few of my students who dragged me out of bed at some ungodly hour on a Sunday to go for a barbecue in the county. My rather pasty complexion probably had something to do with the previous nights entertainment.

Chigu is just north of Tainan City on highway 17.

Wufeng (霧峰) sits about a 20-minute drive south from downtown Taichung, on the notorious Chelungpu Earthquake Fault. On September 21, 1999 (921), a massive 7.3 earthquake struck Taiwan. Although centered in Jiji, Nantou County, the earthquake cause a major uplift on the Chelungpu fault, resulting in extensive damage and over 2,500 dead. The town of Wufeng itself had over 100 dead in this earthquake; just east of the town center, Guangfu High School was ripped in half by the earthquake. Today, a museum has been built at the high school commemorating the earthquake, and also has exhibits about seismic activity in general.

There are eleven recognized aboriginal tribes in Taiwan who each have their own language and customs. The Taiwanese tribes are though to have occupied the island for about 8,000 years and are related to Malay and Pacific Island people. They have been marginalised somewhat by mainstream Chinese society in Taiwan though there is a bit of a rennaissance going on at present.

    Sandimen is in Pingtung County

I know this sounds like a hoax, but with God as my witness, Taiwan does have a place where it is claimed that the water flows uphill...

There are two possible explanations for this phenomenom:

(1)Either there is a quark in the universe that causes the laws of Sir Issac Newton to be voided in this small corner of the world, or ...

    (2) There are so many toxic chemicals being dump into the ground water here, that the toxic brew is literally jumping out of the ground...

Make the pilgrimage to this remote corner of Taiwan, and please judge for yourself...

Located about an hour north of Taitung on the coastal route 11.

    Sanshientai

Sanshientai is a rock outcropping on the East Coast that is connected to the main island by a humped bridge. This area is now a large park, which attracts the rabid hordes packed in tour buses away from the big cities on the weekends...

Directions: Easy to find. Just drive about 45 minutes north from Taitung on the coast road. (HWY 11) When you see the large rock outcroppings connected by a multi-humped red bridge you are there.
