Hot Pot "Ma La": Hot Pot "Ma La" in Gongguan, Taipei, Taiwan

by blackbuster

Hot Pot "Ma La"(”nç…) in Gongguan(ŒöŠÙ)More online: http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/jw!XKOV_ImQHBYtyGYNrHIcVVoYR0mk6hg-/article?mid=492I invited one of my friend to have the "Hot Pot" in Gongguan. We decided to go "Ma La" in Tingjhou Rd, Taipei. There are so many hot pot restaurants on that street. My friend make a phone call to that restaurant early today, but the answer of our reservation is unsuccessful. The staff told us there is no seat for tonight, if we insist to come, we have to wait until there is a seat available.Since we were doing some business there in Gongguan, it will not that uncomvient to wait around that area.So we decided to go there a little bit earlier to get online.Just around 7:00 p.m. , they called us that there is seats available,we rushed there with pleasure. ---We ordered the "Dual Hot Pot", as you can see, there is a separation inside the hot pot. People can choose...

Little Italy: Little Italy in Taichung

by matt_of_asia

A fantastic atmosphere, true italian style dining. You enter the arched doorway and forget that other than all the diners and servers being of Asian descent it could be Italy. The food is magnificent and worth it. This is an upscale classical dining experience. I took my wife here for her birthday and we also had a small wedding banquet here as well. Both were very satisfying, but perhaps the wedding banquet (due to the unusual amount of extra guests and the care they take to prepare food fresh) was a bit slow in service time. -However for the other normal 2-6 person group this should not be an issue and the food is always fantastic. The majority of people order the NT290 or the Nt 390 set meals. You get any pasta available on the menu with the Nt 390 deal, and a limited selection of pasta meals at nt 290. generally if you are willing to fork out more some amazing flavors await you at the...

Jin-Bian-Shao-Chi-Dian: Jin-Bian Shao Chi Dian- Viet food in Taichung

by matt_of_asia

This is a gem of a place that looks like an ordinary tin shack street side shop but deserves recognition for its authentic Viet flavors and amazing cooking skill. High quality food that is cheap resides here.Pho, for the most discerning of tastes, arises like a steaming noodle angel from a hot bath. (80NT) Gently caressed by a light mist of Soya it goes down your throat like pure noodle pleasure. The brisket beef balls are an astounding flavor explosion of wonderful spice, beef juices and oils. (100 NT) The sliced beef is gently marinated in a wonderful sauce that could bring tears to eyes of a vietnamese worker stranded far from his homeland. The sour and spicy soup (50NT) lives up to its name, but sour is a decieving term, the spice is offset by it and there is no need to make any bad faces from the delightful and healthy broth that steams into your nostrils. This small restaurant is...

Mr. 38 Curry/Drinkstand: Some not bad curry-style in Taichung

by matt_of_asia

A decent restauraunt near the Feng-Jia Market area but tucked away from the hordes by a canal. Mr. 38 has a good view of a clean canal that does not smell. (At least while I was there it seemed ok!) With some trees overlooking. I was lucky and spotted a crane wandering around looking for some fish while we were sitting up on the 3F.The food itself is the Taiwanese interpretation of curry (actually its more Japanese style curry) a rich brown sauce with spices added to many Taiwanese favorites.Tie Ban Mien (Iron skillet noodles) is what I ordered, my wife had curried chicken leg and our friend Peco, who showed us the place, tried a Hokkaido cream hot pot. It was all quite well done. It comes with tea if you buy a set meal (hot or cold red or green tea inc.)A good deal for the price and a nice urban retreat from the madness around feng-jia.The one I went to was located on Zi-San Road, #212....

a lot of it looks gross, its cooked in the open polluted air, the meat is a strange colour... but it tastes good.Tip: Say 'Bu Yaw Way Gin' (trying to break it down phonetically) if you don't want excessive msg.

興利小吃: Fried Egg Tofu

by ahdoga

This is a countryside mom and pop eatery located in mushroom country. There are many farms and mountain roads. It's quite busy on the weekends and there is a local open air market nearby. It's tough to find if you can't speak Mandarin or Taiwanese but worth the trip if you can make it. The fried egg tofu is great. Also, the boneless chicken is very good. They have lots of wonderful mushroom dishes as well.

Food not to be missed

by chewy3326

This is a short summary of what you have to eat in Taiwan:The now increasingly-popular bubble milk tea (jhinjunaicha) was invented in Taiwan; for as low as NT 15 you can buy a large cup of sweet milk tea with tapioca bubbles. Stinky tofu (chodoufu) has been widely maligned by other VT members, but it is actually one of the best foods in Taiwan. Stinky tofu smells horrible (thus 'stinky') but tastes heavenly; many street vendors sell it at prices around NT 40 a plate. Taiwan is also famous for its rice noodles (miansian) (mesua), especially oyster rice noodles, which I don't particularly like but other people do. There are many small shabu shabu restaurants around Taiwan, which give you a personalized hot pot for prices around NT 120. You can also try Sichuan food in Taiwan, which is relatively good; mapo tofu is always a good choice in Sichuan restaurants. Of course, there is also the...

Cafe and Tea: Tea shops everywhere

by kiely

We have lots of tea shops, coffe houses here in Taiwan. A great varieties of drinks you can get from those little shops. You can always hang-out with your friends here if you don't like going to the bars or pubs. They're like Starbucks, but only MUCH cheaper. There are usually some snacks too, if you're hungry.
