Street food. Taiwan has...

by choberygoo

Street food. Taiwan has street food everywhere, cheap and absolutely yummy. Neither I or any of my other American friends have gotten sick from eating street food in Taiwan, but I do know people that have gotten sick from street food in New York City. If you're a New Yoker, you got nothing to worry about. Even my hick friend from cow town Ellington, Connecticut ate everything including stinky tofu to shaved ice and didn't worry a bit. Bottom line, excercise your own judgement. If the food looks old/unsanitary, it probably will get you sick. Otherwise, you should be fine as most Taiwansese street food are freshly cooked and prepared.

Genghis Khan lookalikes

by CliffClaven

One of the great benefits of the Nationalists' retreat to Taiwan half a century ago was that they brought with them the culinary dishes of the mainland, and one of the most popular with western visitors is the Mongolian barbecue. Sturdy Genghis Khan lookalikes don't have quite the same appeal - at least, not to old Cliffie - as the cute Chinese waitress he met in the Hilton, but they can produce a sumptuous dish of stirfried beef and vegetables.

The best food can always be found at small shops, even at the street vendors. Try to ask local residents to show you the best ones. Don't miss the tea shops. You will love it!! Steamed Meatball with shrimp, Fried noodles with eels or squids in Tainan, Hotpot everywhere

Many restaurants.: Many restaurants.

Taiwanese people really know how to eat good food, Even if you like Western food, there are plenty of places to go to, especially in Taipei. But as you are in the Republic of China, you must visit some of the local restaurants. My personal experiences of eating local food in Taiwan are excellent - I think they have some of the best Chinese food in the world.

Cairn's Stone Grill: Cairn's Stone Grill

by toddindallas

You receive a very hot 400C stone. You also receive a nice cut of steak, and some sliced, raw vegetables. Place some vegies on the stone, cut the steak in half and place half on the vegies. The other 1/2 steak you start cutting into bites and it cooks as fast as you are cutting. Basically you eat a steak with every bite hot off the plate. Unique, and oh so good. I was in Taipei for 1 month and ate here about 8 times. Little on the $$ side, but good steak here isn't cheap. steak

They serve Hakka food. The place is way off the road. You have to navigate yourself up a steep hill to reach this restaurant but it was worth the trip. The food was delicious!!!
