Night Markets and Food Vendors: Night Markets and Food Vendors
  • Tip Rating:

  • In most big cities in Taiwan, there is at least one `night market'. All kinds of street vendors show up along the main street, creating even more of a traffic snarl than usual, and people show up to eat and whatever. The night market in Taichung was sort of uniform in consistency. There were quite a few cafeterias. I will talk about cafeterias some other time.

    Other night market food:

For $150 you can get a little metal cannister with some soup and a whole shrimp and some veggies and some egg and some other stuff. I never got around to getting one of these.

Ice: You get a plateful of shaved ice (like a snowcone, only without the cone) and pick out three or four things to put on top of it. Some things are fruity; others are beany. This costs about $15--$30 depending on how many toppings you put on. In this country, we hold the ice fixed and run the shaver over it; in Taiwan the ice is attached to a giant screw which screws the ice around and down onto the shaver, which is fixed.

Barbecued corn-on-the-cob. With or without sauce. This cost $30.

Tea: You can get lots of different kinds of iced tea. If you ask for hong cha they put some water, some concentrated tea syrup, some sugar syrup, and a lot of ice cubes into a martini shaker, shake it up for you, and pour it into a cup. It is very yummy. It costs $20--$25.

There are lots of street vendors who have a blender and a whole heap of fruit. You can get them to liquefy the fruit for you or you can just go ahead and eat it plain.

When shopping in Taiwan, the cheapest and better department store to visit is definately Carrefor. They sell really fresh produce an are also the most organised and cheapest and cleanest.

    SHOPPING TIPS
    * Shops are open seven days a week, from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm.Large shopping centers may stay open to 9:00 pm and offer more Westernized ambiance. Night markets usually begin their business at twilight.

    * For foreign buyers, the safest places to shop are those shops designated by the Taiwanese Tourism Administration, where one can always feel at ease about the price and quality of goods and can find a money changing desks. Anyone who wishes to try bargaining with vendors had better change his money in advance.

    * Keep all receipts in case you might want to return or exchange your purchases. Bargaining is only possible with private vendors in street stalls, who don't usually agree to refunds or exchanges.

Shopping centers are large and comfortable and offer a full range of commodities, Chinese or foreign brands, from cosmetics, daily-use articles, garments and home electric appliances to self-service corners. They also have restaurants and coffee bars attached. Each shopping center has a commercial area nearby.

Carrefor is an all in one store. Each Carrefor store comprises of about five different levels ranging from household appliances, right through to clothing and automotive accessories.

A months worth of groceries can cost as little as 5 000 Taiwanese dollars.(143 US Dollars)

In the Department stores and most of the larger stores there are set prices with no bargaining however it is possible to bargain at markets and any of the street side stalls and smaller shops. Nothing ventured nothing gained

Shi Lin Night Market: Largest Taipei Night Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Updated By bakerloo on September 18, 2003
  • Taiwan Page by bakerloo
  • Close to Taipei's Chientan tube station, a visit to Shi Lin is the way to throw a novice into the hustle and bustle of the night market. The energy and friendliness of the vendors makes a visit to this market worthwhile. While certainly the place to try new foods, purchase cheap clothing and other items, the availability of quality cultural items unique to the market was less than expected. Know how to bargin (pen and paper helps) or bring a local friend - expect to pay more as a tourist. Though it is safe and the locals are friendly, keep your money close to you, as with everywhere the crowds are ideal for pickpockets.

  • Taiwanese are fierce business/salespeople. They could talk a monk into a new sailboat i think.

They often keep on going until you buy something, learn to say no. really, its hard sometimes. when i am really stuck i just pretend i cant speak mandarin and i dont understand them, they soon give up.

Hsin Tung Yang is a popular store with branches around Taipei. It is a food service company originating in Taiwan. HTY specializes primarily in meat and pork products. In recent years the company have expanded production into dried mullet roe and various Chinese tea snacks. We bought the famous pineapple cake requested by our relatives back home at their Ximending branch. Pineapple cake costs NT$150 per box with 12 pcs. This is better quality than the other NT$49 8 pcs that we also bought. We had noodles for dinner in their airport branch for NT$48 each. Free hot water is available for the noodles.

    Pineapple cakes.

NT$150 for 12 pcs. This is better quality than the NT$49 for 8 pcs.

One of the biggest bookstore chain in Taiwan is Eslite. The flagship store situated at Taipei TunHwa South Road is one of the largest and also open 24 hr. The books & magazines selection is vast especially in chinese language. There's a cafe attached to the bookstore as well, the atmosphere is cosy.

Especially the new arrival books and magazines.

The price is reasonable and you may find some discount on selected titles.
