Hiking Taiwan

Taiwan may be a small island, but it is possible to hike in a variety of places. For starters, 75% of the Republic of China is covered by mountains. There are many thousands of square kilometers of forest preserves like Xitou and Alishan; six national parks (Yangmingshan, Yushan, Xueshan, Taroko, Jinmen, and Kenting), and many designated Scenic areas (Xilayia, Sun Moon Lake, East Coast, etc.) Then realize that Taiwan has more than 100 peaks over 3000 meters (10,000 feet), including Yushan, the tallest peak in Northeast Asia, Xueshan, a more technical climb, Dabajianshan, Taiwan's version of the Matterhorn, and Chilaishan, one of the deadliest mountains in Northeast Asia. There are many long treks possible, especially in the sharp peaks of the Zhongyang, Xueshan, and Yushan Mountain Ranges.
