What to bring!

  • Most places in taiwan have no closet or storage so be careful and don't clutter yourself up with too much baggage. try shopping on arrival 9Keep in mind that asian sizes are much smaller than western sizes and it may be very difficult to buy pants!!

It is hot hot hot and muggy is the summer. If you are not too worried about pollution it is a good idea to wear tanks and t-s because there is less to stick to you (and it WILL stick!!)
The wintrer stays fairly warm but it is humid and there is no central heating. If you arrive in the winter it will seem fairly warm but after 1 summer the winter will be FREEZING by comparison.
Always have an umbrella handy 9especially May-Aug).

Taiwan is NOT well stocked in deoderant. if you choose to wear anything other than rol-on you will want to bring this with you. There are pharmacies and toiletry shops all over the place but they are a tad expensive.
*Girls will want to bring their own anti-fungals.
*It is a good idea to bring an emergency supply of ay medication you will need (incl. ASA. Acetamenophen or Ibuprofen).
It is very difficult to find any anti-histimines.
It is also a good idea to bring insect repellant and sunscreen.

There are some beaches not too far away from the city. you may find them polluted but other than that... You will want your regular beach equipment (most will have a place where you can change and shower) and some money (for entry fee and eating!)
Don't forget to bring bottled water (*same goes for everywhere in taiwan.)

  • I highly recommend one of those samsonite hard case luggage. I bought this ceramic dragon on the side street going to Tiger Mountain and I just put it in my luggage. It was in perfect shape when I got back home.
Hard case luggages are good for long travels. You're not sure how they handle your baggages.

I love to travel during winter season. I always go to Taiwan during the month of January and February. Its not that cold (for me) specially if you grew up where it snows and drops down to 18 degrees.
Just a couple of jeans, one nice slacks, couple of tshirts and one or two nice top if you're ended up going somewhere nice.
One tennis shoes and one nice sandal. I noticed that they keep on giving away free slippers in taiwan specially the hotels...hehehe

I have this small first aid kit that I always bring with me. Lots of alcohol pads, bandaids, and ointments in case something happened to me. If you have any allergies, it is better to learn how say in chinese 'where the hospital is at' just to be safe.

I only brought my minolta digital camera with 2 gigs sd card. I can record videos on it too and its very handy.

don't drink any top water there. always drink bottle of water or juice. I love their milk tea there.
Learn how to navigate/ride the Metro in Taipei. Once you get the hang out if then you can go anywhere by yourself.
Also, once you get to the airport, grab as many as information you can get.

    Raining season

  • If you are travelling in Taiwan in April until August, an umbella or raincoat will give you a more comfortable journey.

In the summer, Typoon is very frequent in Taiwan especially the coastal area... however, from end of April until June, the weather is either unpredictable, cloudy all day but not raining, or may be rain for a whole day but not heavy.... some people just lazy to bring weather gear...

My advise.. it is better to have at least one....

Take some tea back home. The Fengpu Tea Store, located in Chungking North Road, won a lot of prizes in nationwide tea competitions for its high quality tea. The family of the present owner Jiang Ping-rung was growing tea in Anhsi in Fukien province. In 1883 his grandfather, Jiang Li-chi, opened a tea store in Hsiamen (Amoy). Later in 1922 the shop owner Jiang Li-chi (father of Jiang Ping-rung) decided to close his tea business in mainland China because of public unrest. The Jiangs moved to Taipei and opened the Fengpu Tea Store.
Inside the shop there are 100-year old scales and chops from the time of the Japanese occupation.

    A Windbreaker is a must!

  • Remeber to bring a good Windbreaker! Taipei or should I say Taiwan is not really that cold. But its a whole new different story when the wind comes! It was 2 degrees celsius in Alishan and I only wore 1 long sleeve cotton t-shirt, a jumper and a really good windbreaker (cheers to my brother for this) while the Taiwanese looked like they're going to the Poles or something.

  • Rain coats! The wind can be pretty strong at times, so umbrellas will be rendered useless

  • Taiwan frequently has downpours often without warning. The temperature is often in the high twenties and skies are often grey and occasionally muggy. Buy an umbrella when you arrive.
