The Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • Apart from the large bronze statue of the man himself - the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall is an interesting place as it contains pics and pieces of history of the man that co-founded the country.

Do note that there is a changing of guards every start of the hour - not to be missed.

    Snake Alley
  • Tip Rating:
  • Huahsi Night Market or "Snake Alley" is a famous tourist destination in Taipei. It features restaurants with live snakes -- though I never got to witness it, apparently when someone orders a snake for a meal, the local snake handlers will "charm" the snake prior to killing it.

I did notice snake alley is full of odds-and-ends, tourist trinkets, foot massage parlors, sex shops, and a wide variety of other vendors--all a little too cliche for me. In the north end of the market you can find some decent restaurants that are not quite so touristy... I sat down at a restaurant run by a few locals. They were surprised to see a westerner at their food stall. They gave me a great meal of rice, beans and soup for next to nothing. Great experience.

    Changing of Guards2
  • Tip Rating:
  • In honor of their president and the passing of Chiang Kai-shek, the nation decided to build a memorial hall with a huge bronze statue depicting the leader.

This statue of Chiang Kai Sek is watched over by 3 branches of armed forces and like the changing of guards in London, a change of guards is done on an hourly basis.

Its recommended to go 5 to 10 mins before the start of every hour to catch this event.

  • It's the highest building in the world at the moment. This building has 101 floors, and it's how it derive its name from...Taipei 101.
At the moment, visitors are not allowed to visit on the top floor but I believe one day it'd be okay to view Taipei from this artificial beauty.
Also there is a vareity of choice for dining in the buliding. From the East to the West, also there is one of the best buffets in the city.
Inside, there are many world famous shops, such as Prada, Fendi and so on. For teenagers, there are also young brand name such as Tommy Hilfiger

    The Peitou Hotspring
  • Tip Rating:
  • Peitou, is one of the famous hot spring attraction in Taipei. Thanks to the well-planned train system and helpful guide available at the station, and if you are not easily being attracted away by the beautiful park with playground, hawker stalls selling variety of delicious local foods, etc. along your way up to the hotspring, it takes only about 20 minutes walk from the station.

There, you can enjoy a free hotspring session where you can soak your leg to chase away the tiredness during your trip with lots of other tourists. You can also choose to have your body soak inside the hotspring, then there will be a fee-charged lor!

And finally the smokey scene behind me, which looks like me standing in a fairy place is another hotspring nearby that is soooo hot that you can only see the smokes coming... and of course, you can't have any part of your body get into the hotspring! :p

    GinGuaShi--A place for old days...
  • Tip Rating:
  • GinGuaShi was one of the gold mine in Taiwan anout 100 years ago. Now it represents the properity of old days...
Here you can see Crown Prince Hotel since Taiwan was a colony of Japan. And you can see some history of Taipei.
Also, please do pay a visit to Gold Temple ( Huan Gin Shen She ), there, you can see Pacific Ocean and Tea-pot Mountain.
For personal reason that I like the place, I spent 3 years here for my junior high education. Memories stroke my mind, while I was visiting there. Time pass so fast.

Wulai is a good place to taste village food (remember to try the chicken), admire its waterfalls and buy local products like peach wine, plums etc from Wulai street. There are many hot spring resorts here and its scenery is one of the best in Taipei. You can try the free open-air hot spring on the bank of Nanshih Creek as shown in the photo. Try taking the mini-train ride too. You need to take a cable car to catch a close-up view of the Wulai Falls and to go to the Yunhsien Amusement Park.

    Changing of Guards
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was lucky to be at the Memorial at the exact time for th changing of guards .. at first glance, I actually thought that the `guards' flanking the bronze statue was dummies!!

They hardly blinked, but at the witching hour, the clanging of boots indicated the event... must see.

Thamsui- beautiful scenery with great foods.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although it's abit far away from the city.. but it is definitely a MUST visit place! Hope I didn't remember it wrongly :p, using the MRT to the Tamshui, it should be about an hour, plus another hour from the Tamshui station to the "Yu Ren Ma Tou" by bus.. But, believe me, all your tiredness will be washed away when you seen the beautiful scenery, especially during sun set!

Once you came out from the MRT station, there is a place where you can find plenty of hawkers selling all sort of delicious food, souveniers, games, etc. Part of the restaurants/ stalls do actually situation alongside the river/ sea?? Hahaa.. sorry that I can’t remember it well too.. :p For me, I’ve tried a claypot crab noodles in one of these restaurant while enjoying the view..ahaha.. so wish I’m there now!

After enjoying and shopping around nearby the station, you can then start journey to the “Yu Ren Ma Tou”. The bus station is just opposite the station, or alternatively you can take a cab there too. The picture in the intro page shows somewhere near the entrance of the “Yu Ren Ma Tou”.. and of course.. there are a lot more great sceneries to discover!

Some tiny advices.. maybe you would consider to visit her only during weekdays or non-holidays, as going there during weekends can be really packed! Especially when you are trying to get a public transport, either by bus or cab.

    Taipei's ferris wheel - Asia's 3rd largest!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taiwan's largest Ferris wheel. It was constructed on reclaimed land along the Keelung River. Located on the Miramar's 5th floor, the 100m by 70m, 48 by 6-persons compartment Ferris wheel has already been ridden by 50,000 people. Level 1 to 5 is all about shopping. Not too different from our malls.

However, its uniqueness is the huge ferris wheel located on the top floor and there is a merry-go-around next to it. The wheel takes 17 minutes to revolve & offers stunning vistas of Taipei City. It costs NT$150 on weekdays & NT$200 on weekends & is open from 11am until midnight.

It was built to the same specifications & designed by the same manufacturers as the whopping 106m by 75m Ferris wheel at the Hep 5 Shopping Mall in Osaka, Japan, the wheel has an 80 tilt factor & can reportedly withstand an earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale.

The wheel is not, however, as is claimed by its proprietors, Asia's 2nd-largest Ferris wheel. It is, in fact, Asia's 3rd- largest, as the city of Changsha in China's Hunan Province boasts the largest, which measures 120m by 99m & has 60 compartments.
