Taipei's ferris wheel - Asia's 3rd largest!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taiwan's largest Ferris wheel. It was constructed on reclaimed land along the Keelung River. Located on the Miramar's 5th floor, the 100m by 70m, 48 by 6-persons compartment Ferris wheel has already been ridden by 50,000 people. Level 1 to 5 is all about shopping. Not too different from our malls.

However, its uniqueness is the huge ferris wheel located on the top floor and there is a merry-go-around next to it. The wheel takes 17 minutes to revolve & offers stunning vistas of Taipei City. It costs NT$150 on weekdays & NT$200 on weekends & is open from 11am until midnight.

It was built to the same specifications & designed by the same manufacturers as the whopping 106m by 75m Ferris wheel at the Hep 5 Shopping Mall in Osaka, Japan, the wheel has an 80 tilt factor & can reportedly withstand an earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale.

The wheel is not, however, as is claimed by its proprietors, Asia's 2nd-largest Ferris wheel. It is, in fact, Asia's 3rd- largest, as the city of Changsha in China's Hunan Province boasts the largest, which measures 120m by 99m & has 60 compartments.

Fisherman's Wharf is a multi-purpose leisure fishing port developed by the Taipei County Government. There are magnificent floating piers and a spacious park, with a bridge in the shape of a boat spanning across the harbor and a wooden path stretching over 300 meters at the waterfront.

It is relaxing to lean against the fence enjoying the breeze and sights at the Tamsui River mouth. In the evening, this is the best place to watch the view of the sunset.

Also, during Valentine's day, it's one of the most romantic place but, frankly speaking, the worst time to visit here maybe Valentine's day as it's too crowded ;)

Going back to the past-Taiwan Story Land
  • Tip Rating:
  • The underground theme park is open since November 2005. There we imitate the enviroment of Taiwan in the 60's: old houses, traditional food, old music and servers all dressed in old style. There are grocery store, school class room, Chinese herb house, cinema, cafe, fashion shop, drug store, post office, photography shop and restaurants etc. We are able to enter every house for observing and checking everything in detail like adventure. Food served in Taiwanese, Japanese and Cantonese restaurants is delicious as well. The washing room is designed specially in old style and equipped with the most advanced devices.

I love the old atmosphere there. Everytime I go there, I feel like going to the past... It's really a wonderful place for old people to recall their childhood, for youth to learn about the old times and for foreigners to know better history of Taiwan.

P.S. The ticket (NTD 120) gives every visitor inside free consumption (NTD 120). How a bonus!

    Jade Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Holiday Jade Market is open Saturday and Sunday 9 AM to 6PM. This is one of the largest jade markets in all of Asia. There are nearly 600 stands . It is a really fun place t go , with isles and isles of jade ...lots of bargaining and wonderful for gifts.
The display tables that line both sides of the market are arranged with bracelets, rings, necklaces, earrings, animal carvings, ornamental pieces, and figurines made from jadestones of varying hues. The colors of the gems and carvings range from dark green to emerald to pale green.
I bought a gorgeous pendant that is very unique and special to me.
    You should go!!

  • Directions: The market is located in downtown Taipei beneath the Chienkuo South Road elevated highway. A cheap cab ride away.

    Tam Shiu, Taipei
  • Tip Rating:
  • it was quite cold when I was in Tam Shiu (well, it was quite cold in November and Tam Shiu is just near the sea). took the MTR underground and spent 45 mintues to reach there. i was smart to bring along my MD player and my travel dairy.

my parents told me that there are some interesting shops selling the old-styled toys (not antiquities) which made by wood, bomboo, paper...they also asked me to buy them some and traditional medicine (they had been there 3 months before my trip!!!).

i ate a lot of street snack and walked a lot. walk...walk...walk...to the University (I didn't realize there is a University) and toured around (it was the school day on Monday, so I "hided" under the window outside of classroom, some students just waved their hands to me while the class was going on!!).

after the school tour, i had my afternoon tea in a decent cafe -- Bay Watch and spent almost 3 hours on wrting letters and postcard and enjoying the sunset.

  • In Launar calender, January 15th is the day Lantern Festival, which means the end of New Year traditionally. The Taipei City Government holds festival of lanterns during this days. It's also one of the most attractive carnival Taipei. This year is the year of monkey. So most of the lanterns here are designed to be monkey.
But it ended in 15th FEB for this time, please wait for 2005.
As for myself, I was born in mouse year.

    Lin Antai Old Homestead
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Lin Antai Old Homestead is a nice quiet location in the heart of Taipei. Not as impressive as I expected, but a nice break from the rush of traffic and people. It is a comfortable walk from much of Taipei. The only drawback are the airplanes on final approach to the Taipei regional airport (not the CKS International Airport!) flying directly overhead. It is the oldest building in downtown Taipei.

Construction of the original home took place from 1783 to 1785, while many of the smaller side buildings were built in the 1820s. When the city was growing rapidly in the late 1970s, major road construction threatened to destroy this site. The buildings were carefully disassembled and stored until rebuilt at the current location in 1985.

Beitou is a hot springs resort nestled in a valley at the foot of the Datun Mountains and Yangmingshan National Park. While I did not enter Yangmingshan National Park, I did spend some time in Beitou.

Like the rest of Taiwan, Beitou is overcommercialized; despite it's location in a valley surrounded by mountains, it is unbelievably developed with apartment buildings, hotels, 7-11s, and other buildings everywhere. A good and short walk will take you from the Xinbeitou station, past Beitou Park (nothing to see) and the Beitou Hot Springs to Di-re gu (Hell Valley). This walk is highly unrecommended on a hot day.

I like art and culture so this is an inexpensive way NT30 to view old chinese paintings, pottery and of course new exhibits from all over the world. When I was there they showcased multi-media installations- I was amazing- and phtography from Australians. Of course there are much more see there. There's even a few computers on the first level to log-on and the museum is situated next to a park so you can enjoy a walk too.

It is usually very empty (on the weekdays) and I guess go in the early afternoon. It's calm, serene, there's benches for you to sit and comtemplate the pieces and most-importanly- there's a souvenior shop for all the artsy-fartsy knicks knacks you might need.

    Fisherman's Wharf
  • Tip Rating:
  • Danshui Fisherman's Wharf (Danshui Rurenmatou) (Tamshui Fisherman's Wharf) is clearly a tourist trap, but still worth visiting if you would like to see a Danshui sunset. The wharf is filled with restaurants and bars; at the end of the wharf is a place to watch the sunset. There is also a white Lover's Bridge at the wharf; it is rather new and also rather tacky (but whatever, this is Taiwan). Parking here (like parking everywhere else) is for a fee. It is possible to go on boat rides from the wharf.
