The Shin-Kong Life Insurance Building (Shin-Kong Life Tower) (新光大樓) was the tallest building in Taipei before the construction of Taipei 101, but has now become the second tallest building in the city and third tallest in Taiwan. It is 245 meters tall with 51 floors, and is easily seen from much of the city. The Shin-Kong Life Tower is close to the Taipei Main Station and isn't far off Zhongxiao Rd. Originally, there was a Topview observatory at Shin-Kong, but because of the recent construction of Taipei 101 it is now CLOSED. A large department stoor occupies the first few floors of the building. The best views of the Shin-Kong Life Tower are from the 228 Memorial Peace Park and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
The Shin-Kong Life Building was completed in 1993 as Taiwan's tallest building, but was later surpassed by Kaoshiung's Tuntex skycraper; Shin-Kong replaced Kaoshiung's Grand 50 Tower as Taiwan's highest building. If history teaches us anything, Kaoshiung will probably be building something bigger than Taipei 101 someday...

The Shin Kong Life Tower was the tallest building and the only skyscraper in the city. However this title has now handed to the Taipei 101 building, which doubles its height. Even so, it is still worth checking it out for the 12-story Sun Kong Mitsukoshi department store on the lower levels, and the observatory at 46th floor. Admission to the observatory is NT$150.

Shin Kong Life Tower (or Landmark as it is known) was at the time of my visit the highest building in Taiwan. A very fast elevator will take you to the 46th floor in 30 seconds (real ear popping stuff). There are 51 stories above ground and 7 below. The tower is open 11.00am to 10.00p.m.
You can enjoy panoramic views of Taipei which helps to put the city into a perspective. The night view of course is also wonderful.
