Ximending Pedestrian Lane is Taipei's go-to place for new fashion and night-time entertianment. Youths go here to buy the latest fashion, and see the latest movies. Shopping, sit-down dining and streetfoods, too much and too often advertising and promotions, weekend autograph signing. Artist poster and collectibles, anything and everything you need and don't need are being sold here. It's also called "shimen walker."

Oh and be careful when police roam the streets. many of the food vendors are considered illegally selling their food (the ones in wheels) so, when they start running, step aside... and don't get caught by the sudden rush of hot metals and cooked/uncooked food.

If you are a fashionable teenager looking for the latest and trendiest outfits, you must go to Ximending. Here, you can buy clothes and accessories modelled after the latest in Japanese fashion. Trendy youths and students hangout at Ximending in the afternoons and evenings shopping and having meals in the numerous cafes and restaurants. It is also a place to people watch. There are occasional street buskers who provide entertainment and also cinemas which show the latest Hollywood movies (in English).

Just walking around XiMenDing is a great activity in itself! There are many shops to browse, and lots of people to watch. It's also very interesting how XiMenDing seems to have 'themed' streets. There's a street full of cinemas, a street full of costume shops and such. Prices in XiMenDing were mostly higher than that in the night markets, but one can still find great buys if one looks hard enough. On Saturdays, throngs of screaming fans descend upon XiMenDing to attend autograph sessions of their favourite popstars. Very rowdy, but it was great fun getting caught up in the action!

    Ximending

Ximending is the most popular business pedestrian shopping district in Taipei as well in Taiwan, especially among teenagers, young couples and tourists. Honestly, I did not enjoy my visit could be due to the summer heat but I had to come and see it.

Ximending is not only famous due to its long legacy being the most famous venue for Chinese stars to perform in here but also the historical site like the Red House being one of the landmarks in Taipei City. Ximending Mazu Temple is another historical site worth to take a look. The demolished West Gate of the City was built in Ximending.

Other than dinning and shopping, this might be the place to see the young Taiwanese crowds including teenagers doing summer jobs of various marketing activities, LGBT community doing activities to bring awareness of their rights, and other local communities doing street protest and etc.

This could be the most happening venues for various local activities in Taipei. You should not miss Ximending despite you are not into shopping!

    The Red House

    by cal6060 Updated Jan 3, 2014

The Red House is one of the landmark buildings of Taipei. It was first built in 1908 as a public market to local communities. The building was designed by a Japanese western-styled architect, Kondo Juro. The main entrance of the Red House has octagonal shape building like an eight trigrams (Bagua) and remaining structures are in cruciform shape.

After the fall of the Japanese rule in 1945, the red house has slowly turned into a community hangout place where the locals could enjoy Beijing opera, local talk shows and golden drama.

Today, the Red House is a historical and art center in the famous pedestrian shopping district of Ximending. It consists of art galleries, art and crafts shops, boutiques, a museum, tea houses or cafes, and a theater.

Click here to find out the latest activities in the Red House.
