Getting There and Getting Around
  • Tip Rating:
  • By Air : Taipei's Chiang Kai Shek airport is well served by international flights. All Asian countries have flights to Taipei, with many inter-continental flights passing through Taipei as well. There are internal flights throughout the country

By Rail : The Taipei MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is very comfortable and circumnavigates the entire island. There are 4 types ticket for passengers: One-day pass ticket, Single-journey ticket, EasyCard, Group ticket. One day pass ticket without limits on journeys, distance and can be used on all routes.

By Bus : Highway bus services connect Taipei with all major cities and scenic spots. There are more than 300 bus lines and the major transfer centre is around Taipei Main Station. Because most of the bus drivers do not speak English, it can be difficult for non-Chinese speakers travelling by bus as there is no English information at the stops.

    Taiwan’s Traffic!!!!
I find myself asking and wondering if they are the worst drivers I have ever seen or the best.
My conclusion thus far is that: 1) Taiwan is the most densely populated country in the world. 2) It has more scooters and motorcycles than any other country in the world. 3) The roads are tiny and there are a number of cars, trucks, scooters, bicycles, motorcycles and other contraptions fighting for there space on the road.

At first glance the Taiwanese are bad drivers, but they can park better than any country I have been to (a little better than the Japanese even). For the most part they are really good drivers, who make good use out of the conditions they have to work with.

Many cars have dings and dents, but in many countries the world over in tight citys that had tiny roads before cars this is the problem.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Bus is the most popular public transport in Taipei. However, in Taipei the traffic problem is quite serious. To avoid traffic jams, simply take the subway or the Express train.

  • Tip Rating:
  • All I know, is that going to Vietnam, you go through Taipei (on EVA Air). If you fly from Los Angeles, you arrive and depart from Taiwan from the new airport building. But, going back to the States, if you fly to San Francisco, you arrive in the new airport, but leave from the old one.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Take the MRT whenever possible. Taxi's and buses are also easy to find, and relatively cheap. (When compared to say Tokyo, Singapore, etc...) Or there is always the omnipresent scooter..

  • Tip Rating:
  • The MTR, like Hong Kong, is the most effecient way to travel. Taxi's are reasonably cheap here too although you might struggle with English. Keep a map with Taiwanese writing on it to show the driver or let someone write it down for you.
