Chiayi Railway Station
The Chiayi Railway Station is one of the historical railway stations in Taiwan as it was built in 1896 by the Japanese Colony that linked between the northwest and southwest of business districts in Taiwan. The original structure in 1896 was a single-story wooden structure with Japanese style slanting roof and rain-shield walls. In 1933, the government upgraded the station as the current structure, steel concrete structure with classical symmetry design.
The Railway Station is considered the center of Chiayi City as the main hub for public transportation, North-South Railway Line, and the Alishan Forest Railway line. The railway station is facing the main business district on Zhongshan Road, where you can spend your time dinning and shopping in the neighborhood. It is also easy to find budget accomodation nearby the railway station.
Behind the railway station, there is a pedestrian bridge that link the station to a Bus Terminal. The bus Terminal serves Kuo Kuang Buses and UBus as an intercity bus. On platform 1 on the bus terminal is the THSR Shuttle Bus on BRT line to Chiayi High Speed Rail Station.
On the right side of the Railway Station, there is a small building which serves as the main public bus station. This is where you can buy tickets to board a bus to the Alishan National Park.
Initially, the Alishan Forest Railway links Chiayi Station to Zhushan Station. Due to the typhoon, part of the railway has been destroyed. So far there are several stations are still operational:
Chiayi Station -- > Beimen Station --> Jhuci Station
Alishan Station --> Sacred Street station --> Zhushan Station.
