I've eaten there twice during my stay in Hua-Lian. Luke and I ordered four different meals these two times. And they were all delicious. Price is about average, very affordable.
Favorite Dish: Deep fried pork chop with fried rice and XO sauce.
Steamed rice with mix vegetable covered with lotus leaf
Both are set meal, come with appertizer, soup and beverage

This fruit juice stall is directly opposite Gong Zheng Bao Zi's stall. We ordered the avocado juice. Very creamy and thick. Compared to the fruit juice stall, which is 2 stalls next to Gong Zheng Bao Zi's stall, this stall's juice is cheaper and thicker.

This original stall is called Ye Xiang Bian Shi, which sells wanton. One bowl of Bian Shi cost NT60. There are many photos of politicians and movie stars hanging on the wall. Even the current president, Ma Ying Jiu's photo is there. The soup is quite bland. I prefer the Cantonese wanton. However, according to the locals, this stall's standard has dropped. It is said that the owner's sister set up another stall which tastes better, but I did not try.

Recommended by the guide book. Operating for past 30 years. Famous for its pork buns, dumplings, sweet and sour soup. It is situated at the corner. Very crowded at night. Open 24 hours.
Favorite Dish: Xiao Long Bao. Sweet and Sour soup.

According to the locals, this is the original store, with purple signboard. Established since 1994. It is hot and cold specialty dessert in Hualien. The red beans are wrapped with sago balls, by hand. A must try in Hualien.
Favorite Dish: The balls are eaten with Bean curb, grass jelly, ice cream. Many combinations.

Taiwanese likes to have a proper meal for lunch since they were small. Lunch box is one of the most typical things they we spend a lot of time studying on it. 7-11 has chosen some of well known lunch boxes and launches limited edtion of lunch boxes selling in their stores. This Hualien lunch box is among one of them. The rice from their set meals is specially selected from pure Eastern Taiwan, where is famous for high quality rice. The side dishes is okay but traditional.
Favorite Dish: The fried drumstick rice is very nice, it is crispy enough but not too dried.
If you are tired of delicate food in big city, please come to our lovely countryside for genuine Taiwanese delicacies..

Open air pub right down on the water next to Hualien Harbor. Great place to smoke a cubano while drinking a Heineken and maybe shooting a game of pool. Kinda has a Key West kind of atmosphere.
Perfect on a cool moon lit autumn evening... (Summer here can be a bit warm due to the lack of air conditioning....)

Came to Hualien for 3 days 2 nights. Other than the Taroko Gorge and the seaside to visit, we went to Tzu Chi Foundation, one of the 3 largest buddhist orgainsations in Taiwan.
