We took an express train Tzu Chiang from Taipei to Hualien. Express train are faster and seats are assigned. The duration is about 2 hours. We bought the tickets from Taipei Main Station on the same day of travel.
To check for schedule, the website is http://163.29.3.96/TWRail_EN/index.aspx.

  • Taipei - hualien trains

by pohutakawa Written Jul 31, 2012

At weekends and holidays trains are heavily booked - making planning difficult. I would suggest that if you are having issues getting TPE - Hualien direct train tickets then break the journey at Luodong City. It is often easier to get tickets if you break your journey at Luodong which is "about" the halfway point and good transport hub. This was suggested by a B&B owner I have had a lot of success in doing this.

You can book this way online or at any train station. It might changing seats on the same train, or waiting for the next through train, but it's better than no ticket at all.

By breaking the journey you have more chances of getting all the way there and back by train. If you can't get TPE - Luodong or Luodong - TPE sections by train, buses run VERY frequently between TPE and Luodong. Kavalan bus arrive/depart Taipei Bus Station near Taipei Main Train Station. Capital Bus arrive/depart from Taipei City Hall Bus Station intersection of Keelung Road and Zhongxiao East Road not far from 101. In Luodong both company arrive/depart from their respective offices, both of which are very close to Luodong train station. The fare is approx $nt120 and if traffic is light the journey takes around an hour.

    Talkative Mr Liu

by Orchid Written May 9, 2013

Getting around Taroko Gorge is difficult without your own transport. We read that one could hire taxis and checked quite a few recommendations before choosing Mr Lui. We were very satisfied with the one day tour to Taroko Gorge and the Chingshi Cliffs that we arranged - the whole thing via text message. The cost in 2009 was 2500TD, which seemed pretty standard. Mr Lui was cheery and a good driver, the car was in good condition too. I'd recommend his services to anyone interested in doing a similar trip

We were collected as arranges at 9:30am and finished our tour in the afternoon at Bulowan Village at 1/4 to 6 in the evening- a full and busy day.

    East coast train

    by deeper_blue Written Nov 20, 2009

The train line that runs the length of the east coast is not as quick as the west coast train but certainly more picturesque. From Hualian you can visit Taroko Gorge by getting off at Sincheng station, 20 mins to the north.

    How to go to Hualien

by Burtty Written Apr 8, 2003

You can go to Hualien by the following ways.

    (1) airplane - It takes about 40 minutes to take the airplane from Taipei domestic airport to Hualien airport. The one-way ticket is about USD30 to USD40. The ticket can be bought at http://www.ezfly.com but that website is written in Chinese.

    (2) train - It takes about three hours to take the train from Taipei to Hualien by the fast express at the cost around USD 10 to USD 15.

    (3) car - Although it is a long way to go, it is worthy for you to see the beautiful scenes along the Su Hua Highway (route 9) in the car. You'll take about 5 hours driving from Taipei to Hualien. Be careful to pass the car in front of you only at the safe location.
