You can fly there and chance to bus. You can train there and change to bus... But why?
The long-distance busses in Taiwan are AMAZING!!! The last leg of the journey is is the traditional cramped limozine bus but...
Taipei-Kaoshiung is cheap and WONDERFUL!! The trip is about 10 hours and can be done overnight. The busses are spacious and comfy!! The seats are like lazy-boys and big enough for a 180cm tall person to comfortabally curl-up and sleep in.
You get the bus downtown Taipei. it takes you to downtown Kaoshiung and then you switch for the last 3 hours into Kenting.
The beach. the end of the line and you will know you are there when you see a lone 7-11 and McDonalds in the middle of nowhere.
If you are going for the Spring Scream you will see the crowds and crowds of people. Youcan't miss it!!

It takes 3 hours to go to Ken-ting from Kaohsiung by bus, it is uncomfortable ..!!
I prefer to go to Fang-Liao by Train

broken Ordinary Train Only 66 TWD from Kaohsiung to Fang-Liao ,
Full of Green (Tree) outside broken windows , and I like to sit on a broken Coach ,
the train is always empty .

If you do not want to spend money on hotel, you can chose night bus. Leaving Taipei at 01:00 in the morning and arriving at 07:00. Cost NT850.(US24)
