Favorite thing: The summer sun is hot hot hot in Taiwan, so best to arrive a bit early and secure a nice shady rocky crag for your base camp...
Also based on my personal experience, I do believe that if you were to bring a cooler full of ice cold beer with you, it just might enhance the enjoyment factor for the day.... (It always does for me, but please suit yourself...)

Favorite thing: This place can get a bit popular, so you may see quite a few Taiwanese hanging about around the coastline....
Fortunately most of these people dont know how to swim, so there is a strategy for beating the crowds.... (Hint: HEAD EAST...)

Favorite thing: Coming here in the winter can also make for some good photo ops. The surf will often kick up quite a bit and taking pictures of the waves crashing over the rocky coast line can be pretty good.
Don't venture too close though, since there are people occasionally swept away by a rogue wave....

Favorite thing: Half of the fun of going to Shihtiping is enjoying the beautiful ride on the way down. Most of Highway 11 from Hualien to Taitung is quite scenic, and on a clear day it can really be spectacular...
If you watch out over the ocean, you can occasionally see whales and/or dolphins just off the coast line...

Favorite thing: Taking pictures while snorkeling is quite a bit more challenging that doing it while diving...
When diving you can just sit back, and take you time to adjust the strobes, F-stops, aperture settings, etc. etc.... No such luxury whilst snorkeling.
If you see a fish you want to shoot, you need to plan it all ahead of time, take a deep breathe, and then hope he is still there once you get into position. (I'd estimate that this strategy fails maybe 95% of the time, though you do occasionally get a decent picture....)

Favorite thing: The coastline can get a bit crowded on a summer weekend day, but if you don a pair of flippers and kick out into the inlet a bit, you will quickly find youself pretty much all alone... (save the fish of course....)

Favorite thing: Pretty unlike that you will run across any Giant Mantas or Whale Sharks here... But there are enough tropical fish and coral formations to make it an enjoyable way to pass the day...

Favorite thing: If diving and or snorkeling is not your thing, there is also a small harbour at Shihtiping where they run whale watching tours and fishing expeditions....

Nice place to cool off on one of those scalding hot Taiwan summer days... ***iping is located about 90 minutes south of Hualien, and is the closest place for snorkeling and /or diving. Though the...
