    Salsa Cubana: Salsa Cubana

    Salsa Cubana

This pleasant-feeling, colorful Canal District establishment is Taichung's first salsa bar, featuring not only salsa music but regular salsa dance classes. Classes are offered Fridays and Saturdays, 7 to 9 p.m., by a visiting professional salsa instructor from London, where this dance is the current craze. Students, who dance in the basement area, pay NT$300/hour and get drinks at the bar for half-price. All customers can enjoy a selection of alcohol that includes beers (NT$150), wines, spirits and NT$200 Latin cocktails like the Cubano (Cointreau, rum, egg and lime juice), Barstardo Sufridor, La Bomba, Catalina Margarita, and Fidel Castro (dark rum, lime juice and ginger ale). There are also various food dishes, such as the Ultimate Latin Burger (NT$220), Cuban Potato Wedges (NT$120), Nachos a la Cubana (NT$180) and Blueberry Pie (NT$120). Salsa Cubana is very easy to find, given the fact that it is just down from Napoli, in the former location of other establishments like PJ's Cafe and Napoli itself.

UNDER PARK AIR WEB PARTY LOUNGE: UNDER PARK AIR WEB PARTY LOUNGE

Under Park is a very large new multi-purpose disco/lounge/women's work-out club, located underground in what once was the Golden Eye disco pub, beneath the Great Earth movie theater building. Walk down the stairs, through the neon-lit passageways and you'll come to the main attraction--one of Taichung's largest dance floors (400 pings), completely mounted on big springs. This means that this place really rocks, quite literally, when there's dancing. The disco, equipped with a NT$15 million sound system, can easily accomodate hundreds. During the daytime, Under Park operates as a women's-only work-out center, with the focus on aerobic dance work-outs and similar exercise. Hours are 9 a.m. to 10 pm. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday; and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Friday and Saturday nights, it turns into big disco, complete with a big stage, DJ booth, bar facilities and plenty of seating (NT$400 cover charge). On other evenings, it serves as more of a bar and lounge, with relaxing sofas and lounge music (minimum NT$400/person charge).

The Pig Pen Traditonal British Pub: The Pig Pen Traditonal British Pub

A couple days ago, friends suggested a visit to Pig Pen, hoping to savor some cocktails, dance a bit, and (if lucky enough), get rid of annoying fat around the tummy. Since then, I have again been addicted to this pub, longing to hang out in there every night. Truly speaking, the time spent in Pig Pen is indeed joyful and reminiscent, as long as you don't have to get up early the next day. Pig Pen has long been the landmark of Taichung's pubs. You can never fully experience Taichung's hot nightlife without a visit to it. The entire building, big as well as prominent, projects the very image of traditional British bar. Ground level is a bar, providing cigars and live broadcast of sports games. Second floor is a dancing hall with free entrance before 9pm. Music features pop, jazz, and reggae. Its DJ is definitely one of the best in town. Wed and Thur are lady's night. Free entrance for girls, $350 for boys. $500 on Friday and Saturday. Sun through Tue $200. Band show times: 10p-10:45, midnight-0.45am, 2am-2:45am.

    SOUND GARDEN: SOUND GARDEN

by Kurtdhis Written Mar 10, 2003

Sound Garden - Early Morning Chill Out

Sound Garden is anything but a conventional pub. Located in a vacant lot directly opposite The Pig Pen, it consists of a converted 40-foot shipping container, wooden deck with chairs and tables and a circle of old park benches (arranged around a 50-gallon fire drum when it's cold).

There is no sign to identify the place, only a barbecue stall out front. Thanks to the unconventional approach of owners Mr. Wang and Mr. Mo, however, it has become a big hit, particularly after about 3 a.m., when customers from The Pig and other closing pubs, pub employees, band members and loyal foreign customers begin converging on this place and stay until dawn. The owners emphasize that its a relaxing, chill-out place with a variety of music, sometimes with a DJ, including trance, techno, rock, jazz and other types. Customers can bring their own albums for a try and relax and talk over NT$100 500cc draft beers or whiskey Cokes, and barbecued snacks. After an official March 31 opening, expect business six days a week, more food available from 5:30 p.m. on and additional facilities.

    Night market

    by o00o Written Dec 2, 2002

When travel to TaiChung, I would rather suggest no restaurant or bar if unless you will stay here for more that 3 days.
