Shimen Dam is a huge dam about 2 hours south of Taipei. When I was there there wasn't really a lot of water, but it was still nice. It's impressive to see this huge wall and the water falling down hundreds of meters...
You can also do lots of water sports here, go for a boat ride or walk up to the temples and the huge golden Budda statue...

This ornament is in the Wenu Temple. I really like the colours and the dragon. The whole temple, like all temples in Taiwan, is very colourful which I really like. And you have a great view of Sun Moon Lake!

The Wenu Temple is at Sun Moon lake. Apparently the two stone lions in front of it are the biggest one in the whole of Asia! And really, they are quite impressive!
This temple was badly damaged in the earthquake in 1999 and is still being rebuilt. But you can visit it anyway.

Sun Moon lake lies in the middle of Taiwan in the mountain. It's a popular place for honeymooners, I read...
The main village is quite small but there are many hotels. We had quite a nice one for good value! Unfortunately, I can't remember its name. But it was just at the beach in the traffic free aeria. From our room we had a fantastic view over the lake.
We hired a boat and paddled all the way out to the island. Well, because the lake is dammed this island was a hill at one stage. It used to be the grave yard of the local people. For that reason it's still sacred ground!
There are often earthquakes in the aeria of Sun Moon lake. There was a very bad one in 1999 ,I think , and you can still see some damage today!
