You will see a few hydro plants in the valley, where they divert water through pipes from high up in the mountains down through turbines for power.
Though that means less waterfall action in the valley, I guess that is better than coal burning power plants.

If you do decide to take the long route across the mountains, be mindful of the elevation change, so bring warm clothes. Also no Grand Hyatt's or McDonalds out this way, so camping gear and food might be good idea...

There are several places where you can get down to the river bed to cool off in the clear cold mountain stream.
Just be mindful of the possibility of flash floods. The small stream can quick turn into a raging torrent if it is raining up in the mountains...

Lots of hiking options here...
One popular option is to hike the narrow gorge section from Tongmen to Longjian. (about 20 km's roundtrip...)
Another trip that I am dying to make is the three day hike from Tongmen over the big mountains to Lushan hotpsring area in Central Taiwan... (Someday !!!)

Best to bring a torch along as you will pass through a few long dark tunnels along the way... (lest you want to hang out in the dark with the bats.......)

As you head up into the river valley, you will find that there is a small hydroelectric dam and water reservoir just east of Longjian........

The narrowest part of the rivere valley is around 7 km's west of Tongmen... (almost as nice as Taroko, but without the tour bus traffic...)
