Kenting National Park

by Burtty

The Park is located at the southern tip of Taiwan in the area called the Hengchuen Peninsula. It is well known for its uplifted coral reefs, tropically oceanic natural resources, natural monsoon forests, and coastal tropical rainforest. Among them the water recreation is especially attractive. The weather is warm enough for year-round swimming, although it can be a bit on the nippy side in the winter. Sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, and wind surfing are all available. The beaches are the best in Taiwan. Kenting is also famous for its coral that stretches 60 kilometers along the southern tip, its unusual rock formations and the Recreation Area that contains different species of fauna originating from many parts of the world.

National Palace Museum

by Burtty

The National Palace Museum houses a rich collection of precious treasures of Chinese history. Long ago it was even referred to as one of the four great museums of the world. The history of the collection itself dates back to the 10th century, and represents the accumulated treasures of the Imperial collection: all kinds of calligraphy, books and documents, bronzes, porcelains, jades, lacquer ware, carvings, and more. The museum's astoundingly varied collection is of nearly 700,000 items. The current National Palace Museum was built in north Taipei in 1965. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every single day all year round. It offers both long-term as well as special exhibitions, systematically exhibiting its complete holdings according to the unfolding of history. To enable the international visitors to experience the glory of Chinese culture better, the National Palace Museum...

City of One Hundred Temples

by CliffClaven

Perhaps the most interesting town on the island is Tainan, also known as the City of One Hundred Temples. Located just north of Kaohsiung, it is Taiwan's oldest town and also has some interesting remnants of the Dutch presence on the island in the 17th century. The town has a fascinating night market.

Tip Photo
Sun Moon Lake

by CliffClaven

Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan has long been favoured by the island's honeymooners. And there is indeed something wistfully romantic about standing on the slopes above the lake, looking across the water on a misty morning to Hsuan Chuang Temple. Hsuan Chuang, whose remains are enshrined in the temple, was a monk who carried Buddhist writings from India to his homeland and was thus responsible for the spread of Buddhism through China.

Tip Photo
Taroko Gorge

by CliffClaven

The Taroko Gorge is a dramatic 20-km stretch of the East-West highway that ends at the Pacific port of Hualien. The deep marble ravine is easily Taiwan's most impressive natural feature. The best way to visit Taroko is to fly to Hualien and find a taxi to take you on a round-trip through the Gorge. Don't drive yourself: the road is so twisty and hazardous that you would never have a chance to admire the scenery.

Tip Photo
National Palace Museum

by CliffClaven

Even those who don't know very much about Chinese art are impressed by the treasures on display at the National Palace Museum. As the Nationalists were retreating before Mao's Communists, they spirited away the collection that successive emperors had accumulated over the centuries. The museum on a hillside just outside Taipei can show only a fraction of the treasures stored in secure vaults deep inside the hill. It is estimated that if the display were changed every three months, it would take 20 years to show all of the Museum's paintings, porcelain, jade and ivory objets d'art.

Lungshan Temple

by CliffClaven

Lungshan Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Taiwan. It is probably also the most popular, and whenever you visit you are sure to see scores of devotees making their offerings to the Goddess of Mercy. All around the temple there are narrow streets, including the famous 'Snake Alley', where you can dine on health-giving snake soup. Just point to the serpent you fancy, and the vendor will kill it, skin it and cook it for you.

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial

by CliffClaven

The Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial in central Taipei is a massive structure built to honour the memory of the military leader who fought the Communists in the civil war that ravaged China after the defeated Japanese occupiers had left in 1945. The Nationalists were forced to retreat to Taiwan, where they set up the Republic of China with Chiang Kai-Shek as its first president. The hourly changing of the guard at the Memorial is an outstanding spectacle of military precision.

National Museum

by Gnome

This is the stuff that was saved from the Cultural Revolution in China. Needless to say, it is an incredible collection of Chinese art and artefacts - I was pretty amazed by the whole place, even though I am not a big museum person. Apparently the museum only shows 5% of their works at any time - so you may have to go 20 times to see everything.

Taroka Gorge

by Gnome

It is a big gorge on the eastern side of Taiwan, with huge blue marble cliffs and quite spectacular scenery. The road into the gorge is a real eye-opener - tunnels have been drilled through pure marble. I am not sure that the environmental laws are so strict in Taiwan.
