Danshui

by Taipeier

A suburb to the north of Taipei, Danshui is immensely popular with daytripping Taipeiers, primarily for its riverside promenade lined with snack stands and trinket stalls. For tourists, however, the main draw is a number of historic buildings to the north of the busy commercial streets. The most important of these Fort San Domingo, which was the center of first Spanish, then Dutch power in northern Taiwan in the mid 17th century. The late 19th century Huwei Fort, a Qing dynasty customs office and a handful of buildings associated with the 19th century missionary George MacKay round out Danshui's historic attractions.Despite their number and importance, these sights are somewhat bare and only really of interest to history buffs. That said visiting them makes for a pleasant stroll, as the area is green and quiet and offers good views of the Danshui River. Fort San Domingo in particular is...

Maokong

by Taipeier

This tea-growing region on Taipei's southern fringe is the best place for a quick escape from the city. The primary activity is tea drinking at one of the dozens of tea houses that offer good food and excellent views over Taipei, as well as tea. Hikes ranging from easy strolls on paved paths to rough wilderness treks are possible. The most famous of these leads to a temple built into a cliff behind a waterfall. Just getting here is fun- you can take a gondola up from the Taipei Zoo MRT station. All in all one of Taipei's must-see destinations.

Tainan

by Taipeier

The city of Tainan is the heart of Taiwaneseness. It is where Chinese Taiwan began, and where Taiwanese folk culture is best preserved today.Tainan was the capital of Taiwan for 250 years, through the Dutch colonial period, the Koxinga period and most of the Qing period. As a legacy of its former importance it boats an amazing array of temples, enough to keep a temple-obsessed tourist occupied for days. There are also a number of historic sights, though these are unimpressive and only of interest for their importance in Taiwanese history. Tainan is also famous for its traditional food, considered to be far better than the Taiwanese food found in Taipei. In spite of it's traditional atmosphere, most of Tainan is not at all historic, and it is as hostile to pedestrians as any Taiwanese city. Public transit is poor and budget accommodation is lacking. It is nonetheless a must-see for those...

Lugang

by Taipeier

Lugang is the best place on the Taiwanese mainland to get a taste of traditional Taiwan. It has Taiwan's best "Old Street", lined with old shop houses and relatively unsullied by concrete. Its two primary temples- Tianhou Temple and Longshan Temple- are among Taiwan's most beautiful. It doesn't have as wide a range of food as Taiwan's cities, but its snacks are among the best in the country. There are also great craft shops and two old mansions that provide a glimpse into the lives of Taiwan's old elite.Don't expect pure Old Cathay, however- Lugang's old street is overrun with day trippers on weekends and has some ugly tourist shops. It's also relatively hard to get to- the fastest way from Taipei is HSR to Taichung, train to Changhua and finally bus to Lugang, taking a total of two hours. Even so this is the best place to get an all-around taste of Old Taiwan, especially for those...

Taroko Gorge

by Taipeier

Taiwan's premier natural attraction. This marble-lined gorge is impressively deep and narrow and easily visited. Buses from the nearby city of Hualien can drop you off at one of the several easy walks that give impressive views of the gorge. The best walks are the Nine Turns Tunnel, Swallow's Grotto, Eternal Spring Shrine and Baiyang Waterfall (possibly closed). Most of these can be seen in one very long day, but in order to see everything two days is necessary. It is possible to stay in the gorge at Tianxiang, near the gorge's western end, or at the upscale hotel in Buluowan. Hualien offers a wider range of hotels (and food). The best way to view Taroko Gorge is from the Zhuilu Historic Trail, which can only be visited with help from a Taiwanese friend or through a Taiwanese hiking club. See the Off The Beaten Path section for information on this trail. The gorge is easily visited from...

Taipei

by Taipeier

Taiwan's economic, cultural and political center is not one of the country's main draws, but does offer a microcosm of Taiwan's attractions. The city is surrounded by mountains offering excellent day hikes, has a handful of attractive temples, hosts some great festivals and has some good night markets. It contains some of Taiwan's best Japanese-era architecture. Good tea houses and hot springs can also be found nearby. However, the only thing that can't be found elsewhere in the country is the National Palace Museum, which displays the Chinese emperor's treasures.Taipei is a good destination for those who hope to get a taste of Taiwan but only have a few days to visit. It is also good as a base for forays into the central mountains, down the coasts or to the outer islands. It is only an essential destination for those interested in modern Taiwanese pop and ancient Chinese imperial...

Lungshan Temple

by xymmot

Lungshan TempleThe Lungshan Temple, also known as Dragon Mountain was built in1738 and has long been devoted to Kuanyin- the Goddess of Mercy. The temple was destroyed by an earthquake in 1815, but its statue of Kuanyin survived to be rehoused in a new temple, which was itself destroyed by a Typhoon in 1867. A new temple was built only to be again demolished by American bombers on a raid against the Japanese in 1945. The Lungshan Temple was built in the Ching Dynasty. It was restored several times after a series of natural disasters and human damages. The temple's doors, beams and poles are beautifully decorated. There are a pair of delicate bronze dragon poles in the front hall, and another four pairs of dragon poles in the middle hall. There are also exquisite wood sculptures. Among them, the wishing well and the Guanyin setting

stuff to do in taiwan

by rkearns

i just got back from taiwan yesterday. don't bring any food in your bags.visit south of taipei, the town of hualien is a link to the taroko gorge. the beaches are not nice. on the west side, taichung is a cool city with lots of stuff to do. within taiwan, go to the shilin night market (there are others too... look at the map when you get there). there's the zoo and the national palace museum, the chang kai chek memorial (spelling could be wrong on that) but those are all boring compared to the beitou hot springs.south of hualien is taitung, a small town, if you want to get out of a city...hope that helps.

Taking wedding pictures in Taipei

by geminian13

For the Bai He Hua blossoms in Jun to Aug and the florescence of Mei Hua here in Taipei is about the late Feb, so you can't expect to find both of Bai He Hua and Mei Hua in the same place and same season. Mei Hua can only blossoms in cold season and Taipei rains a lot in winter time. If you are still highly interested in taking your wedding pictures with Mei Hua,the best place to find Mei Hua in Taipei is the Yat-sen Park (no.46,Section 1, Chun-shan north Rd., Taipei). It's nearby the Taipei Main station.
