The Grand Hotel Taipei

by Sambawalk

The Grand Hotel completed in 1973, is a landmark located atop a hill overlooking Taipei City, Taiwan, Republic of China. It is owned by the Duen-Mou Foundation of Taiwan, a non-profit organization, and has played host to many foreign dignitaries that have visited Taipei. The hotel's roof is currently the world's largest Chinese classical style roof. With its vermilion columns, the roof makes the hotel a visible showplace of Chinese architecture and culture. The hotel itself contains numerous objects d'art, wall panels, paintings, carvings, and significant restaurants. Dragon motifs are frequently intertwined throughout the various structures that make up the hotel, earning the hotel the name "The Dragon Palace". Beside dragons, lion and plum flower motifs also make a significant presence in the hotel.

Taroko National Park

by dvt9

It's beautiful and magnificent with a lot of marble gorges, caves, trails and cliffs. It's worth to visit. From Taipei main station, you can take a train to Hualien, there you can hike a motor and drive for yourself to visit Taroko park. For us, as recommended from some people on other websites, I booked a one day trip taxi with Mr Lo Lai Fu. He is enthusiastic and can speak some english. He acted like a tour guide. One day trip (8-9hrs) costs about 70USD.

Walk on the hanging bridge

by hopang

Hanging bridges are quite common all over the island of Taiwan. Walking along a hanging bridge can be a lot of fun! However it can be dangerous too especially for small children. Children must always be accompanied by parents when walking on a hanging bridge. It can also be frightening if the bridge is too high above the valleys and rivers especially for those persons who are afraid of height!

Taiwanese Temples

by Kyle-Taiwan

They are everywhere, some are large some are tiny. Be sure to check them out where ever you travel!Tainan in southern Taiwan is famous for very large, fancy and old (relative to Taiwan's occupation). Its one thing to just look at them, but its a whole other ball game if you get to watch some kind of ceremony. Ask some people if they know of anything planned while you will be there. A gods birthday for example usually brings out a bunch of people, costumes, dancing and fireworks. The best time in my opinion is to visit during Matsu's Birthday, there is some culture!

Snorkeling

by Kyle-Taiwan

Maybe not the best in the world, but up there i think. There are 4 areas that i find great for snorkeling, in order of best to worstOrchid Island (by green island but further, ferry/plane)a long ferry ride in rough water. If you get sea sick, this will be hell. there are many bags behind every seat, and hanging from posts everywhere......and many people use them. Going outside to get fresh air may help. ferry is around $1500NTDSnorkeling here is supposed to be the best here, This is the one place i have yet to go to (i fear that ferry like you wouldn't believe!).Green Island (40min ferry from Taidong, or plane)Shorter ferry ride than orchid island, but in the same area, about $800NTD. Spectacular snorkeling. a 1 hour or so guided tour is only around 300ish NT$ ($12usd)....beat that! many fish, lots of coral and barely any current (but waves)this island is small, and only walk on ferry is...

Nature Trip

by billbing

We went up north of Taipei on a rented van. Went to see the rock formations at Yehliu Geopark about an hour drive up north. If you love nature you will surely like the feel of the place. You can see stones that are carved by wind and water into something that looks like a slipper, a queen's head, mushrooms and some other forms you can think of out of your imagination.

Yehliu

by limledi

Yehliu is quite a distance from Taipei City. It requires one hour of travelling time. Bus fare costs NT$102 per head. We took KuoKuang Bus from Taipei Intercity Bus Terminal located next to Taipei Main Station. Take the "Chin Shan Youth Activity Centre" route. Yehliu is where Yehliu Geological Scenic Park is located.

National Palace Museum

by limledi

National Palace Museum is one of the five best museums in the world, with a collection that totals more than 700,000 bronzes, jades, shell-and-bone writings, paintings, and calligraphy works ranging from the Neolithic Age through the end of the Qing Dynasty. Museum tour takes at least 2 hours. Tickets: NT$160. Cheaper for groups @ NT$120. Student NT$80. Headphones are provided for self-guided tour. Opening hours: 9AM-5PM daily.

Shilin Night Market

by limledi

The Shilin Night Market is the first and foremost among all the night markets in Taipei. It is tops in terms of taste, types of products, crowds, size and convenient transportation. The products sold here are really cheap. You can try the various street foods sold in the area. You can also find restaurants here for dining.

Tip Photo
Fisherman's Wharf

by limledi

Fisherman's Wharf is a new Danshui tourist attraction. It is located further downstream from the town itself and offers a boardwalk, chic coffee shops, a slightly pricey seafood restaurant, and is a departure point for tourist boats traveling along Taiwan's scenic northeast coast. The "Lover's Bridge", a single slanted tower cable stay pedestrian bridge spans the harbor. The bridge's illumination changes color at night, making this area a favorite with local couples and romantics. Outdoor concerts are sometimes held in the amphitheater.
