General tips for getting around

by DSwede

City-to-city buses are easy because everything is written in Chinese and English from the bus terminals. All of the train and subway (MRT) are also easy because things are written in Chinese and English. The inner-city buses are cheap and easy, but will be more difficult if you do not know the way because most are only labeled in Chinese. The major tourist areas will have English signs for buses. But the cost of all the above is very economic. If you take a taxi, it is recommended that you have a map or business card that has Chinese translation of where you want to go.

Freego Airport Bus

by limledi

We took Freego Bus from the airport to Taipei City & vice versa. Going to Taipei was a bit difficult since it will not pass by the hotel we were staying, Neijiang Hotel in Ximending due to the late hour. Instead it dropped us off in Sungchiang Rd. The bus driver was so kind as to help us find 3 taxis for 14 pax seeing that we were tourists. Freego bus ticket costs NT$140. Taxi fare NT$150 to the hotel including surcharge of NT$20 for the late hour.Going back to the airport is more convenient. We booked our bus tickets at TS Hotel which is a short walk from our hotel for NT$150. We have to wait for the bus at TS Hotel. Even if our flight was 10:55PM yet, we had to take the bus early since the last bus to TS Hotel is 5:50PM. Bus was a bit late. Keep stopping to pick up other passengers. Halfway to the airport, we were required to change bus. Bus trip took 2 hours. We had difficulty...

Getting the EasyCard is the next best thing to do. This is likewise fast & convenient. You can also use this card on buses. You can get discount when transferring from MRT to bus or vice-versa within one hour. So it's really good value. Cost NT$500. Wulai Tram

by limledi

Wulai Tram is such fun to ride in going to see the Wulai Waterfall. Tram ride cost NT$50 per person one way. We also took the tram back from the waterfall viewpoint. You can also walk along Lovers Walk if you don't wish to ride the tram. But riding the tram is more exciting. Besides it's going to be a long walk.

Kuo Kuang Bus

by limledi

Kuo Kuang Bus serves the airport-Taipei route. We also took this bus on our way to Yehliu to tour Yehliu Geological Park. It was a pretty comfortable ride with huge seats. The bus has signs indicating the next stop. Take this bus from the Taipei Intercity Bus Terminal (next to Taipei Main Station) Counter 19 to Yehliu -- "Chin Shan Youth Activity Centre" route, a distance of about 54km. The journey takes about 1hr 20 mins. The bus fare is NT$102.

High Speed Rail

by chewy3326

Taiwan's High Speed Rail (HSR) (Bullet Train) is simply amazing. There is only one line, running from Kaohsiung to Taipei. This is THE way to get around Taiwan fast. Prices aren't cheap, but it's worth the experience. Compared to regular train service in Taiwan, the HSR is much faster and much more comfortable. The train takes only two hours to get from Kaohsiung to Taipei, only 1 hour between Taichung and either destination. Although the trains can reach speeds up to 300 kph, riding is extremely comfortable, and you barely feel the train moving. There are HSR stations (that I know of) at Kaohsiung, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, Banqiao, and Taipei Main Station. The cost of a one-way ride from Taichung to Taipei Main Station is NT 700.

Bus Ride to Taipei

by denna

Travelling by bus is cheap in taipei but make sure you know where you gonna stop. If you have to take a bus from the airport make sure you check the map available at the airport and COUNT how many stop you have to go through before your own stop. when you have already board the bus, it's hard to see the sinage and you might loose your way
