Free seating on Taiwanese trains

by agc

Train passegers take note. Although there is a "Seat no." printed, it is usually treated like an ink smudge because the locals don't give a damn about seat numbers. I bought a train ticket to Hualien from Keelung station. Looking at the seat number, I thought to myself I can finally sit down and relax, but when I boarded the train, all the seats have been taken!!! I asked a local(who is also standing) about this and he told me that this is very normal. So the next time you see a seat that you fancy, rush in and take it, it's yours!f.y.i this tip applies to Taiwanese buses as well

DOMESTIC TRANPORTATION

by ancient_traveler

Domestic airlines provide daily flight between Taipei and other major cities. Reliable express buses connect Taipei with all major cities and most scenic spots, and reserved-seat, air-conditioned express trains provide fast, comfortable service around the island. Fares for buses and trains are quite reasonable. Rental car are also available.

Flying to Taiwan

by chewy3326

Taipei Chiang Kai-shek International Airport (Taibei zhongzhen jhichan) (台北中正機場) is the main entry point for visitors to the island since it impossible to drive here from anywhere else, and there are no ferry/ship lines to the island. Taipei Airport has connections to many major Asian cities, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Bangkok. However, there are two notes to be made about flying in and out of Taiwan:1. Flying to/from mainland China (PRC): There are no direct flights from Taipei to mainland, because of the touchy political situation; this means that to reach cities like Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing you must first fly to Hong Kong and then connect to flights heading to those cities.2. Ever since the 2003 SARS incident, none of the American airlines have been flying directly from the USA to Taipei. China Airlines...

Railways in Taiwan

by chewy3326

The most convenient method of getting from one major city in Taiwan to another major city is by railway. Taiwan has a very good public transportation system. It is possible to circle the entire island by railroad; smaller rail lines also run to areas like Alishan. One of the most popular lines in Taiwan is the Zhi-chiang hao, which is an express train running from Taipei to Kaohsiung, with stops at major cities along the way like Taichung, Hsinchu, Banqiao, Tainan, Chiayi, and Miaoli; it takes about 5 hours from end to end. Riding Zhi-chiang hao from Taipei to Taichung is 2.5 hours for NT 375. In Taiwan, it is possible to reserve tickets and pick them up at a post office; in event of a typhoon or earthquake, you are often able to return tickets at a train station.

Round Island Train Pass

by msmm

This is a restricted pass allowing you to take 7 trips in all type of trains (local, semi, slow, fast) for NT$1706. But beware~! you are only allow to travel in ONE direction only - clockwise or anti-clockwise. You can save money using the pass but you might miss out some fantastic scenery along the east coast, for that I took a bus from Jueisui to Hualien with the rafting company (NT$150).For my 2 weeks on the main island it saved me NT$180.

buy/rent a scooter

by millablake

Kaohsiung City has a very poor public transport system. the taxis are cheap, but not a great way to travel if you are here for a while.a scooter is very necessary. also very dangerous. the roads are not for the weak. Totally hot tip: Wear a full face helmet & a polution mask.

Look Where you're Driving, No One Else Will!

by Lildeer

The Taiwanese are considered "fatalists" in that they assume everything is pre-destined, even the particularly gruesome. They are not inclined to look when pulling out into traffic or when passing, or changing lanes. So if you happen to be on the scooter in their line of fire and get hurt, well it was meant to happen.Don't be a highway statistic. Always wear a helmet, use your signal, and drive defensively.

If you want to get around...

by Dulittle

If you want to get around Taiwan, you can rend a car. It's very convenient when you go to the recreational areas and avoid getting stuck when buses are not on time or don't come. Another choice, you may take train to the destination and then transfer a bus.
