Cross Island Highway to the...

by Pete_Thera

Cross Island Highway to the East Coast. This is a picture of tunnel drilled by hand 30 years ago. It 's very dark inside. Flash Light is a must. You may ask your driver to drop you off at the entrance, then you walk through the tunnel and get on the car at the other end.

by Lao_Dawei

It is possibleto circle the island by train, but it is not particularly cheap, comfortable, or convient to do so. The best way to get around is by bus. The state run busses are ok, but most routes have independent, borderline-legal mini busses which are cheaper--providing you can barter in Chinese. It is also possible to rent scooters in Taiwan and travel that way. Be warned that the rules of the road are seldom followed to the letter, and horrible traffic accidents, often involving scooters with multiple passengers, are so common as to be barely noticed by passerbys.

Forget the ferries!

by CliffClaven

Well, old Cliffie certainly wouldn't recommend any offshore ferries. For those in a hurry, there are domestic air services linking Taipei with Kaohsiung and Hualien. For those who like to keep their feet on the ground, the train service down the west coast of the island is fast and efficient. Driving in Taipei, as in most Asian capitals, is not for the timid.

Flew on Mandarin Airlines....

by Dick_Loudon

Flew on Mandarin Airlines. Terrible company. Nothing in English to read during the flight, and movies in Chinese only, with English subtitles. Food was terrible. Cabin staff surly. Cabin dirty and old, a surprise on a relatively new 747-SP. I would never recommend them to anyone. You're better off swimming to Taiwan than to fly Mandarin, if they still exist.Taxi, although the country is terribly expensive for anything.

Singapore Airlines with a...

by Chi_Pei

Singapore Airlines with a stopover in Singapore (unique chance to get it so cheap). Same suggestion with Thai Airways and Bangkok.By rented car (take a wreck and all insurances!). If you are a really good driver, you never dreamed you could drive so!The Highway busses are a really good way to join big cities!Get maps, a good sens of observation, patience and all you can remember in chinese!

MUCHA LINE MASS RAPID TRANSPORT (MRT)

by ancient_traveler

The first of Taipei’s major MRT lines. Train leave every 2-4 minutes, and the total trip from first to last stations approximately 20 minutes.

Taipei subway

by Sambawalk

It is convenient to go around in Taipei city by subway. The short distance ride is NTD20.
