animal cruelty

by millablake

Callous regard for animal wellbeing is not uncommon. Street dogs roam in packs in Kaohsiung.further reading:http://www.animalstaiwan.org/http://www.atkaohsiung.org/http://www.savedogs.org/english/

the land of natual disasters.

by millablake

Taiwan has more natural disasters than any other country in the world. The typhoons cause flooding, so don't ride your scooter during high winds. Earthquakes are common, but usually uneventful. The buildings are build to withstand.

MRT self-serve vending machines for Easy ticket

by TravelBug_sg

When you buy store value ticket from those vending macines at MRT stations, make sure you feed the machine EXACT change, even though it may say it will give you change. I was as Ximen MRT (near my hotel at Ximenting), and wanted to buy a store vaue card, minimum value is NTD500. My friend fed it 5 x NTD100 notes and got her card. I fed in 1 x NTD1000 and got my card but NO CHANGE!!!! Luckily it was early in the morning, on a weekday, but after the working peak hours. I had to stand by the machine, and refuse to let further customers use it (otherwise how would staff know the last transaction is mine?), while my friend went to control station and got a staff to come open up the machine. He took out some receipts from the machine, and ask me to show it to Control Station, and the lady there gave me the NTD500 change back. *WHEW*PS. NTD500 was more than sufficient for our 5D stay, and this...

Taipei Main Station

by TravelBug_sg

Warning! TP Main Stn is very very huge. If you wish to transfer from MRT to railway, you must give yourself more time to get to your platform. After buying your tickets (and these are time stamped), give yourself plenty of time to find the correct train platform. It took us a good 10 mins and we walked very very fast, to get onto the platform, from the ticket booth!

Dare to Drive!

by Part_Native

Unless you just love major city traffic issues, DO NOT try to drive in the major cities. The traffic is controlled by police but many drivers seem to be in the biggest hurry to get through town. When an accident happens, the local rule of thumb seems to place blame on the largest vehicle involved. So if a bike cycle hids you you are at fault. If you hit a bus, the bus is at fault.

Typhoons

by kenmerk

Typhoons..... Lots and lots and lots and lost of typhoon...Probably safe to expect 3 to 4 a year... One good thing tho', the extra water in typhoon season certainly gets the many waterfalls flowing.... (landslides, too......)

Centipedes as Big as your Hand!

by Lildeer

Multi-legged things come in a gigantic size in Taiwan. Centipedes are often 8 inches long, and they bite! Be sure to keep the drains covered in your sink and shower, they've been known to come in through the plumbing. Also watch out for spiders and snakes when spelunking.

Vagrant Men at Train Stations

by julietkilledme

Just a tip especially for female traveller: Watch out for Vagrant Men who spend their life sleeping & hanging around the Train station or during train ride from one town to another, not for theft rather for physical offence. As they would target especially on lone female tourist & would queue up right behind you on purpose & push his body towards you. Use your bagpack to block their "thing" from poking you or push them away should they want to touch you. Be fierce & stern should they wanna offence you physically for I had a few bad experience there & by fighting back makes me on the winning streak. And they would stray away from you once they notice that you have a male companion. Hope these would not even happens to you.
