"butter duck" and yoghurt in a Kyrgyz home by Trekki, 4 more photos If you have travelled in one of the Central Asia countries already, you will be familiar with most of the dishes and food you’ll get along your way in Tajikistan and the Pamirs. There is an abundance of juicy watermelons, cherries, apricots and other fruit to select from. For lunch and dinner there is shashlyk, laghman soup (a rich soup with noodles, meat and vegetables), plov, samsa, manty. Usually, salad is brought as a side dish, mostly cucumbers, tomatos and onions. All is served with very much delicious nan bread – I even found a video on youtube which shows how this bread is made (oh, I get homesick and hungry now….) For those of you who like porridge – good news, this seems to be a very popular dish for breakfast (for those of you who don’t like it – well, but you won’t starve, as nan bread will feed you :-) . I never starved and I hate porridge, lol). But the best of all is the yoghurt, which is made mostly from yak milk. It has this perfect slightly sour touch and tastes heavenly. (some of my photos are borrowed from my Uzbekistan pages)
For drinking, bottled water is offered everywhere, usually in 1,5 l plastic bottles. I found the best tasting one (well, for me, as I don’t like the “plastic” taste which is often present in some bottled water) in Khorog, a brand called Panj (like the famous river). Beer drinkers can be happy, the Russian beer Baltika almost everywhere, although not available in all 9 tastes. No. 3 is mostly sold. Tea (choy) is offered all and everywhere, quite often complimentary – remember that this is one of the Central Asian countries where “tea” is a local custom. It is available as green (chyorny choy) or black (zelyony choy). Bad news for coffee lovers: it is mostly available as Nescafe powder. (And for those who cannot live without the typical soft drinks – there is a big variety of these as well; local and western brands. Well, western brands are of course more expensive). Luxury, a city home setting with felt mats eating by catdockev Private homes are the only way to go. This feast was prepared for us. The food is basic, but tastey. All Central Asians sit on the floor. The felt matts (seen here) can be bought to take home and add great color and comfort to your home floors! My favorite story was elaborated at dinner this night. There was a British spy that had infiltrated the Muslim world, even Mecca! No one could catch him, he looked at acted and spoke like an Arab. The Tadjik King decided he knew how th get him. They threw a huge party with the livliest music and most beautiful dancing girls. The King noticed one man tapping with his foot, that was the spy. People of the near and far east bob thier heads to music, no foot tapping. The spy was caught and executed! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

MMmmmmmmmelons! Barakat market, Dushanbe. by Saagar If your are a health freak, thirsty, loving fruit or whatever, you'll be happy in Tajikistan during the fruit ripening season. And depending on the fruit, the season is long and varied. Central Asia has a good climate for tree-groving fruits as well as ground-hugging ones. The grapes can be fantastic, the melons superb, the water melons are delicious everywhere, and apples, pears, apricorts, peaches - - the list is long. During the right time of the year you can splurge on fruits and no need for other intakes...
